WHAT YOU SAY

[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]

I was wondering if there was anyone in any kind of official capacity (or anyone at all) who could give me some figures on the types of jobs held by Asian Pacific Americans in Houston and also the number of people, or percentage of the population that hold these jobs. If possible, can anyone describe the education level of APA in Houston as well? Thanks

Be:

You are also incorrect about the Metropolitan area sizes as well.

The Houston Metropolitan area includes portions of Fort Bend, Waller, Montgomery, Liberty, Galveston and Chambers Counties. Separately incorporated areas which are part of the Houston Metropolitan area but not in Harris County include:

The Woodlands
Baytown
League City
Katy
Sugar Land
Deer Park
Jacinto City
Richmond/Rosenberg
Mission Bend
Cinco Ranch
Cypress-Fairbanks
Copperfield
Galveston

When all of these areas are added to the city of Houston, plus other separate municipalities in Harris county (like the Park Cities in Dallas) such as City of South Houston, City of Bellaire, West University Place, Memorial Villages, Spring, Spring Branch, Spring Valley and Jersey Village, you have a metropolitan area of 4.3 million people. DFW, including Euless, Arlington, Plano, Fort Worth, Rockwall and other municipalities has a population of around 3.4 Million.
In other words, the Houston Metropolitan area has about 900,000 more people than DFW.

As far as best areas in Houston for Asian Americans, the municipalities of Sugar Land and Katy are 11.20% Asian American--that's even more than the City of Houston (5.70%), which makes those areas the areas in Texas with the highest Asian concentration as a percentage, while Houston has the highest raw numbers. In the Dallas area, the suburb of Euless has about 6.0% Asian Americans, which is no surprise as it's an upper middle class area like Sugar Land.

In all honesty, I feel no acrimony towards DFW. It has its high points as well as its low points. However, Houston does reing as the supreme city and Metropolitan area in Texas in size, diversity and Asian Population. (See Trung--it's easier to make the point with facts rather than being rude!)

The Numbers Do Not Lie:

I'm suprised. I thought Dallas county was larger and more populated. Even if this is true...you must also remember that some people who work in the metropolitan areas of houston and dallas do not reside in that county. If you're looking at metros, Dallas is larger b/c its business areas includes plano and fort worth, which is not in dallas county. Houston metropolitan area is only in houston.

Be:

Dallas is not much larger in size or population than Houston. Houston is bar none the largest city in Texas in land mass and in area, as well as in population.

Here is 2000 Census Data:

Houston City

Land Area: 540 Square Miles
Total Population: 1,953,631

Harris County (Houston area):

Private nonfarm establishments: 84,106
Land Area: 1729 square miles
Total Population: 3,400,578

Dallas City

Land Area: 342 square miles
Total Population: 1,188,580

Dallas County (Dallas area):
Private nonfarm establishments: 63,830
Land Area: 880 square miles
Total Population: 2,218,899

Houston outnumber Dallas by around 800,000 people within the city limits. Harris County outnumbers Dallas county by around 1,200,000 people. Houston is 200 square miles larger than Dallas. Harris County is twice as large as Dallas County is in land area. Harris County has 33% more non-farm business establishments than Dallas County does.

Furthermore, in the National List of Cities, Houston is FOURTH, right behind Chicago and closing in. Dallas is EIGHTH!

Be, why don't you take a job for the Dallas area propaganda bureau because your fuzzy logic is as bad as George Bush's and Al Gore's combined.

Bill,

I don't think u can learn to play defense. You either can or can't. Remember Kenny Smith? I just didn't hear anything on him about defense. All the sportscasters mention his shooting ability, but never defense. Just my opinion. Take care.

Mr. Campbell,

With all due respect, your situation is the exception. My friend married a WF and she doesn't even seem a bit in tune about the Asian culture, much less issue. He asked her if she could take some Vietnamese cooking lessons, but she declined. My brother-inlaw is also on the other end. I've heard experiences from countless others. Other marriages are for the green card, but that is another story.
