to fellow former rice owl...

i assume you mean baylor in waco, or do you mean the med school in houston? yes, rice is most definitely a very undergrad-focused school; in fact, they use it as a selling point to high schoolers! where else can you get great research opportunities that put you on equal footing (if not higher) with the grad students. and for an unbeatable price! unfortunately this does mean the grad students tend to get pushed aside, unless you're in the mba program (rice doesn't have an undergrad business major).

and thanks for the props to rice females!! i've always been a little shocked by the "ugly girl" reputation that seems to follow us after we step "outside the hedges".

I didn't go to Rice for undergrad--just for a second Master's degree. While there were A LOT of highly intelligent and attractive (simultaneously) women who went there for undergrad, some of the undergrad guys were in need of developing some social skills.

Being a grad student at Rice was as much fun as it was being a grad student at Baylor (where I got my first Master's degree). It seemed that if you were nice looking, in decent shape, had good common sense, reasonable intelligence and good social skills, you were able to date a good variety of attractive and intelligent women.

The only complaint I have about Rice has nothing to do with the women--but rather the ATTITUDE of some of the professors. They treated the Grad Students who were their teaching/research assistants like slaves to do their legwork while they took all the credit. Also, the professors were more willing to help out the undergrads during their office hours than the grad students. In other words, the grad students were considered lower on the academic chain than the freshmen as far as the professors were concerned.

At least the professors at Baylor didn't have a "publish or perish" rule because they said teaching was more important. In fact, Baylor professors were required to keep one and a half hours of office hours for every 3 semester hours they taught. For an average professor, that meant 9 hours of office hours a week. You would think that Rice could take a page from that and apply it to their students.

Females don't go to clubs to get "hooked up", we go there to have fun with our girls and make fun of the fobs who try to hit on us and don't get the hint and look down on the dorks who just sit there and stare on the sidelines. I don't think you guys would have a problem finding cute girls if you yourselves were either cute or intelligent. There's just a way too many cute girls-to-ugly guys ratio in Houston!

to viet guy in houston & asian guy:

wow, strong words on the attractiveness of rice asian females from guys who i believe never went to rice? although i must admit, we do have that reputation, for whatever reason.

i would say over the 4 yrs i went there, i've met countless girls who most people i know consider quite good looking, including former beauty queens. now rice guys...uhhh i won't even go there. many of them also need a personality...

My experiences at The SOCIAL or TONIC? I've only been to The SOCIAL a few times, but every time has been pleasant. Basically it's just a big'ol lounge where people just stand around and drink. That's it. It's very casual and I like the atmosphere. The music is alright. The name of the place is very contradictive. I mean the people there really don't mingle or socialize with people they don't know. Alot of people there just stand around and gawk at each other. I guess that's for all the clubs in Houston. My only gripe with this place is that it gets way too packed on certain nights. I had to turn away a few times because the lines were way tooooooooo looong!

TONIC is ok, depending on which night you go. I never had any problems when I went there. Overall, the quality of clubbing in downtown Houston is going downhill. Why? This is my biggest gripe of them all, freakin' CONSTRUCTION!! The stupid metro-rail project is hurting everything around it on Main street. It's forcing us to find other venues to explore. That's ok though. It's allowing other areas of Houston to step up to the plate. I heard the new place to be is CEVEN in midtown. I heard JADE is supposed to be pretty swank too. I also heard that The GATSBY'S has made a revival. I haven't been there in over a year. I was digging it's decor and would love to visit it again.

Are you serious??? Rice has good looking women?? No way!! Every male that I talked to that has attended or hanged out there said that Rice has the homeliest women (aka NERDS!) in all of college campuses. Of course you have your exceptions, but I heard most of the co-eds were of the NERD species. Hmmm, interesting. I must further investigate this.

Hey ASIAN MAN WHO'S A HOOTER'S FAN, which professor did you see at the new Hooter's? I did my basics at HCC-Stafford and I use to work there as well. C'mon, a hint at least?

Hey IDIOT-SAVANT, you would love St. Thomas University. I have a friend who goes there and says the female to male ratio is 8-1!

I'd have to say that i found quite a few Asian women at Rice, though not attractive. I did find alot cute Caucasian women though, not nerdy looking as i had perceived.
