AC Dropout,
superficial question: To which degree did martial artists castrate themselves according to that book you mentioned?

Every Martial Artist Regardless of His or Her Fighting Method Must Understand what Jeet Kune Do is not - a Style.

"Just a kid living my life",
differ between sports and martial arts. Martial arts weren't originally invented by people who wanted to defend themselves but by sadistic aggressors. Watch the kids at school, they try out new fighting techniques by torturing weaker children. The same with adults. Samurais and Hwarangs tried out their swords by cutting prisoners of war into pieces. On such occasions they found out the most effective way how to cut with the sword.
The "wise" teachers whom you might admire are "wise" for commercial purposes to attract rich pupils from the upper class.

SOG,
You know the highest books of Kung Fu recommend castration as a method of increasing one's skill.
Would you like a copy of that book?

Martial Arts was origianlly about defending your home or land and family. It was also used for warring between diferent groups, struggling for power. Around the time when Martial arts came about, it was used for killing because it was either kill or be killed in most situations.
Now days there is no "fight to the death" going on, and martial arts used in much more of a different manner than this. Learning a fighting art can improve self confidence and build stronger personalities in an individual. Self discipline is also learned from the arts and is something everyone should learn in order to be successful in life, whether it is learned through martial arts or not. Martial arts is just a great way to gain these qualities in life.
It doesn't matter what martial arts you like more, or which one looks flashy versus which one is more efficient. It's about looking inside yourself and learning about life.
When learning martial arts for self defense, or for fighting if you are into competition, then there should be no "favorites" or "i like this style better". Each person has his/her own body type aqnd mentality. This means one style could be learned easier by one person, where a completely different style will better suit the other. I strongly reccomend everyone to take as many different styles before choosing a style to become dedicated to. I was always partial to Wu Shu untill I started ground fighting with some friends and realized that I can ground fight and grapple much better than anything I can do on my feet. Consequently, I have always hated the ground fighting arts because they didn't look interesting to me. But now I'm a full time juijitsu artist and love it. I still practice everything I've learned from other arts aswell.
Martial arts are a wonderful thing to take up. You'll get way more out of it than you will put in, I promise. But never let yourself become tunnel visioned or even completely blind to new ideas.
A true martial artist is someone who encourages other martial artist to train hard and become better. Those who try to discourage others and do not like to see others around them advance are not true to martial arts. It's these discouraging people that are the lazy ones, and just want to be the best without working for it. The true artist wishes for hiw peers to become great, so in the end, he will also become great, because he trains with them. So the next time you become jealous because a class member advances faster than you, think about what you really want out of martial arts.

I think good books are hard to find. But they help you exponentially. I learned my best fighting techniques form books. They taught me the correct form, increased my speed and power many times, and skipped the bullshit of "schools" and went for the real thing. It may take a little practice, as anything in life, but GOOD books will increase your fighting capabilitiy tremendoulsy if used correctly.
