WHAT YOU SAY

Can you people comment on the above statistic-that women handle the checkbook 74% of the time and men 26% of the time? Would this also be true in Caucasian households, or is this unique to the Asian or Asian-American household?

"some of the very simple things in life can make an individual feel complete--being loved, receiving support, having faith, being acknowledged. why are asians so resistant in emphasizing this?"

Asians don't resist it. That is exactly what asians seek but they use money and material generosity as a fast way to get it. That's the problem b/c most likely they won't get it anyway b/c it appears obligatory. Fewer people are truly generous. Therefore, fewer people are truly grateful.

Growing up around Filipino-American communities, I find that my ethnic group is more notorious than other Asian-Americans in the "art" of "wanting to look rich/wealthy/more-than-well-off." The sad part about this is that Filipino-Americans either subtly or even blatantly compete with each other in this regard. Even sadder is the fact that not-so-wealthy Filipino-Americans buy all these pricey luxuries (and other big-ticket investments to include bigger houses, custom-made vans, Benzes, Mercedes...you get the picture) just in the name of looking much better than the average Filipino Joe.

Herein lies my agreement with 24yr Old Chinese Gal when she her criticism of Asian culture "is not the desire to be successful...but the desire to create a perfect image."

Chinese women and others:

what u are saying partially is true...chinese people are more generous when dining out, but not b/c they are necessarily kind, giving individuals...as a matter of fact, chinese and most asians are pretty frugal. i believe the reason they seem generous is b/c they place a lot of emphasis on image.

they obsess over money to obtain the image of being powerful. affluent business people are wanted at wedding ceremonies so the family can present the image of being prestigious. they want every family member to live under one roof (even if no one gets along) to create an image of a loving, supportive family.

diligence, success, generosity...these are all admirable qualities. as a matter of fact, it APPEARS to be the ideal lifestyle. and that's exactly the problem. what i am criticizing about the chinese/asian culture is not the desire to be successful...but their desire to create a perfect image...and how this too often leads to neglecting our emotional needs.

some of the very simple things in life can make an individual feel complete--being loved, receiving support, having faith, being acknowledged. why are asians so resistant in emphasizing this?
