Movie watcha,

You don't get it. I think you need a little more cultural education. The difference between Scottish and British is more like the difference between cantonese and Northern Chinese.

However, the difference between Koreans and Japanese is more like the difference between British and Italians, or British and Spanish. Last I checked Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan have not played Spaniards or Italians.

Just once, can there be an American made movie or TV show (non kung-fu)where an Asian American man (Chinese, japanes, Koeran, etc.) plays a romantic lead and the woman is not underage? Just once.

Did anyone see "Corky Romano"? Pretty funny. It's one of those dumb/funny movies. Anyway there was an Asian guy that played an FBI agent, he had a decent role, and he was very tall and pretty good looking.

asianboy:
about your observation of that scene in Not Another Teen Movie. I'm Vietnamese and no, I didn't find it offensive at all. In fact, I laughed hysterically. That scene was making fun of all the ridulously stereotyped Asian characters in American movies, like Sixteen Candles, to name one. You seem not to have understood that Not Another Teen Movie was a parody of American teen movies.

AA DOOD- RE Dustin Nguyen playing a Japanese guy on 21 Street: although his character was first created as Japanese (his name was Aoki), in a later episode it was revealed that he was actually Vietnamese. He had to change his identity because of his involvement (or his family's involvement-- I don't remember exactly) in the Viet Nam War. I guess the writers finally decided to use Dustin's ethnicity to their advantage.

AA DOOD:

Not all Caucasian actors play their ancestry either. For example,: Sean Connery who is Scottish, George Lazenby who is Australian, Timothy Dalton who is Welsh and Pierce Brosnan who is Irish all played the very British (as in ENGLAND) James Bond. (Don't ever call a Welshman, Scotsman or Irishman "British" unless you want a fist in your face, by the way!)

There have been plenty of Jews (i.e. Michael Landon) who have played Gentiles and vice versa. We've seen some WASPS playing Italians and vice versa too.
The bottom line is that there needs to be some flexibility in allowing people of the same "race" to play a character of their same "race" but a different "national ancestry" than their own. Such as Linda Park playing "Hoshi Sato" on "Enterprise."

"What I don't understand is why does Garrett Wang who is Chinese in real life play a character with a Corean surname? Can someone clue me in?"

We have to accept that American media thinks Asians look alike.

On this WB show I saw, this Korean guy plays a Chinese guy named Chau.
In that show V.I.P. Dustin Nguyen plays Johnny Loh from Hong Kong. Dustin Nguyen also played a Japanese guy in the 80s series "21 Jump Street".

Does anyone remember the movie "Cannonball Run", a movie about a cross country car race. Jackie Chan was in it and he cast as a Japanese driver. He was even speaking Chinese in it.
