X,
I agree, NYC is the most accepting place in the world for Asians...not only are we accepted by the majority group but the minority groups...blacks and Hispanics also accept us as a fellow minority. It's a perfect cradle to be in!

NU2NYC,
You have a good theory. Another reason is that NYC is crammed packed. It forces people to live together thus reducing certain racial tensions found in big cities such as LA. In NYC, all of the neighborhoods are interconnected together. Well to do people tread on the poorer sections and low income people do the same with nicer areas. Another reason might be the fact that NYC is a place for immigrants and many of whom are from poorer backgrounds. Unlike Whites from other parts of the US who claim ancestry from England, Germany, Scotland and France, European immigrants who came to NYC were from Southern and Eastern Europe. People from these areas were poorer and less educated. NYC is predominantly Jewish, then Italian, Polish, Irish and Greek. These people are still regarded as "non-assimilated" just like the other minorites.
I haven't been in Asian circles for quite sometime. Are you a college student? Maybe some clubs on college campuses might be a good start. You could even check out certain sites that usually advertise AA events and social gatherings.

LSD,
I'm new to New York and have noticed that whites are more accepting to Asians here than the West Coast. My theory is that they see more similiarity with us than African Americans or certain Hispanic groups. Perhaps they perceive less threat? Anyhow, can you suggest some organizations in the NYC area for a young Asian professional? I'd like to meet more people. Any other suggestions for restaurants, barber shops, Asian-friendly places would be greatly appreciated.

AC,
Yep, the apartment in which I live is pretty cozy. Everyone is quite friendly with one another. Sometimes I wonder if this is surreal, given the fact that most people in New York and America are very private in behavior. Asians tend to be less reserve when it comes to sharing and comforming. I guess its part of our culture, but many Asian Americans who adapt to the Western Mentality behave like Whites. This includes their bad traits as well. I wonder if there are serious limitations to assimilation (such as would it backfire on Chinese Americans?). Either way, we are still trying to find a niche.

Outlet,
I thought I was the only person who felt NYC was more accepting than anywhere else in America.
It's contradicting sometimes to be in New York where people are often aggressive and rude then to realize New Yorkers aren't as superficial and self centered as Californians.
Californians and other Americans might seem friendlier and warmer, but New Yorkers are more genuine, expressive and tolerant of outsiders.
It's also funny how you mentioned the Ahole West. Why do many Asian Americans out there constantly complain about the evils of White people? Why are racial tensions in California so intense? Why does Hollywood always take a beating as being "racist" towards Asians? Why are minorities out there just as bitter as Whites?
I have visited several Chinatowns on the West Coast and compared them to the New York Chinatowns. There is one thing that I noticed which separates their Chinatowns from ours. The Chinese on the West Coast are less friendly toward White patrons, and they seem to resent them with contempt.

I was just back to NYC for the PC Expo convention and I was amazed how differently NYC has changed.
If anything there is a better tolerance among the different races of people. I heard fewer racial slander and remarks to others and a more community spirit.
It is alot different here in Colorado where it is white as the lilys and the people have gone bad here. Mostly rednecks and white trash from neighboring states like Texas and a-holes and snobs from California.
One thing I did like was not having to deal with the Californians in NYC all they care about is themselves.
Anyway it was better to live back east than to live in Ahole west.

AC,
"You see that show "American Idol" where they try to screen applicants to become the next pop singing sensation. I didn't watch all of it. But there were things one of the blunter judges would say, "You don't look like an American Idol." "
Actually, many Whites in this country are not willing to move forward with the race concept in this country. If you think about it, they're the ones who are conservative with everything. Unlike the Jews, the Asians come from a totally different set of traditions and perspectives. Sometimes others are impressed by us, other times they resent us...either way, our presence and achievements in this country will make a statement and counterbalance the Eurocentric Western ideals of this country...it is inevitable!
