I live in the SF bay area and SF/Oakland used to have nice nightlife for Chinese in the 80s and early 90s. Comparing NYC and HK, I been to both and the night spots are very nice. I think both are better than any other places you can find in the US or in Asia, though I've never been to Tokyo and Osaka but gotten good reviews from some friends who been there. There's definitely one big difference comparing NYC to HK on staying out late at night or straying off to unknown parts of the city. HK you'll definitely be safe whereever you're at (I should include much of East Asia.) Go off to a wrong place or wonder off by yourself in NYC and you could get quite frigthened or mugged by the local thugs. Shopping for clothes is great in both cities though.

NY vs. HK

Here is what NY has:

Metropolitan Museum of Art / The Met / Central Park / Times Square / Greenwich Village'

Here is what HK has in comparision to NY, respectively:

HK Heritage Museuem / HK Cultural Centre / Victoria Peak / Nathan Road-Times Sq. / SoHo

HK is a much more sophisticated city than NY. Everything is very progressive and tech-oriented unlike NY, which time after time wants to see itself in the past due to the European American penchant for nostalgia, something not found in Asians.

HK is the 3rd most expensive city in the world, only 2 Japanese cities Tokyo and Osaka rank 1st and 2nd. NY is ranked in the teens.

HK has the 2nd largets skyline in the world, after New York City. And is the 3rd largest international business place in the world, after NYC and London. HK is home of the largest airport in the world. Sucks though, HK has even more expensive housing than NYC. It is 2nd most expensive, 1st being some place in Europe. But HK ppl are really rich, they even have the most Bentleys sold per capita in the world!

Go to HK, and you'll see your city is crap.

I think aesthetically Paris is the most beautiful large city in the world but Paris doesn't have the energy or the diversity of Manhattan.

>>Yep, NY is a ghost town in >>comparision to some Asian city. Just >>take good look at the city right now, >>it is a ghost town since the 9-11 >>attacks. Even a city like Manila in >>the Philippines is more vibrant.

Ghost town? You must be talking about a different NYC than the one I live in, because its far from a ghost town.

Manila? You're trying to be funny, I see. Did you attend Halloween Parade in the Village this year? Could you even walk through the crowds without stepping on someone else's feet? .... Ghost town! the nerve!

New York City is the place to be - no, its not HK... but it has such a unique mix of things that it puts it at the top. I'm sure that we could put together a comparison list of what NYC has vs. HK.

Here's some: Metropolitan Museum of Art / The Met / Central Park / Times Square / Greenwich Village

Now give me some HK sites to see! :-)

What does HK have to compare with NYC?
Because HK is one big chinatown that's why! Try to visit there and just blink your eyes and one minute you think you are in NYC and the next in HK with waves and waves of HK'ers.

I know what TSJ is talking about those Shanghai or Mainlanders chicks. I knew one who was hot and I was her boyfriend for sometime but she always does something outrageous to her fashions or put on too heavy lipstick that when she smiles she has the red lipstick stuck all over her tooth. Mine you I don't think it is a turnon but she gets all hot and bothered whenever I rush over and take the excess lip stain off her tooth and lips. something primitive and wild I guess.

Overall many of the mainland girls are nice and down to earth; if not shy, helluv a lot better than some of the weird mindgames Taiwanese girls or the perpetual fashion conscious look at me HK girls.

Hong Kong is beautiful? Noisy, dirty and full of rude people. hahahaha!!
I've never seen Hong Kong ranked among the top ten beautiful cities around the world in any travel magazines. Notice only nerds commenting on here are former British coolies, Hong Kongers.

Hey LSD and AC. I thought I'd find you in here.

"My honest opinion is that the night life in Asian cities seems more vibrant, because of the population density. Honestly, NYC does seem like a ghost town in comparision at night."

You think NYC is dead at night, check out SF. Man, you can hear a pin drop. In the US, NYC is known as "The city that never sleeps," so I guess if even there it is not very vibrant, what does that make the other American cities? Good thing LV is only an hour flight away for us. That truly is the city that never sleeps.

I've never been to NYC, so I can't vouch for it's level of energy, but HK is certainly extremely vibrant. Even in Shanghai, people walk the streets at 2 in the morning. Then again, it could be because they have nothing better to do. In Asia, HK and Tokyo are the places to be. Seoul? Taipei? Singapore? Those places are dumps in comparison. If HK is NYC, then those cities are Omaha, Nebraska. No, check that. Those places would be like Kansas City, Missouri. Omaha, Nebraska would be like Shanghai.

It's funny in Shanghai when you see a girl who looks fine as hell, like an HK girl, but when you talk to her, she is totally unsophisticated. It's deceiving. You assume that in such a high tech looking city, the people would match, but far from it. They try too hard to look like HK and Tokyo girls, but if you look closely, something just doesn't look right. They wear sandals with nylons, and their knockoff designer clothes look very cheaply made. If I could get one, and give her a makeover, man, she would be hot. Shanghai girls have bomb ass bods, much better than Cantonese girls, in my opinion.

HK has the most beautiful skyline in the world, bar none. From atop the hill looking down into the harbor... ahh, that has to be the most filmed city scene ever. The only thing that might rival it is the shot of the GG bridge and SF from the Marin side.

Hell yeah, HK girls know how to dress. They are the finest clothing connoisseurs anywhere. Even the HK girls living in the states take trips back home periodically for shopping sprees. That's why they have all the clothing you can't find here.

I don't know about the "underdog" theory though. Maybe it is more true in the old days, when our parents came over. My parents are from HK, but they are more like Chinaman Toi Sans than sophisticated modern HK people. Most of the HK'ers I see coming over nowadays (at least where I live) are here for business opportunities. I don't see too many poor ones immigrating anymore. That spot is taken by the mainlanders.

Man, I have to find me an HK or Tokyo girl. Tokyo girls are hard to find though, since there are so few of them around, and most are here for only a short time. They don't really relocate here. HK girls are plentiful though. Since they go back to HK all the time, I can go back with them. =)
