WHAT YOU SAY

[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
As an Asian female I found a partner in a Pacific islander who has alot of Asian qualities such as respect & honor intermingled w/American qualities such as free spirit & independence. I had always dated outside my race and was surprised to find my self attracted to him. In my opinion race does not make a marriage. Finding someone who you can talk with and enjoy each other's company is the greatest find. Marriage takes work and overcoming obstacles such as cultural/race difference is one of those obstacles.

Anyone else here want to take bets that chief thunder is some white wannabe indian? Why I say this? Simple. Just visit any native american forum and you will those forums overrun by whites (who love to TELL the real native americans how native americans use to live, how's that for a laugh eh?).Those whites also love to use those hollywood names like running bear, wolf spirit or chief thunder!

Sea Justo and Flashdance:

Example: Dan Quayle went to school on a minority fellowship as he was part native American. Works great doesn't it? You can have your cake and eat it too!! No, I am not white. Not even close. I am a very dark skinned Asian Indian from a town called Rameshwaram, India, currently living in the United States. So dark skinned that many whites consider me black and white women hold their purses tight when they see me, and attractive white women run away from me.

Well Mr. Chief Thunder,Native American expert beyond reproach know it all !!
The discussion had to do with interaction and marriage between NA and "African slaves", therefore my comments dealt with those tribes more likely to have been involved with the intermarriage with Africans, that would be mostly in La. and the Gulf area.
You should be honored that I've studied the plight of my Native American brother.
So excuse.......................me!!!
See ya
what the hell do I know ?    Monday, October 22, 2001 at 11:21:33 (PDT)
POW WOW this: I understand you were "taken" when you watched 'Dances with Wolves'. You probably watched it 100 times and rewinded it too. But the "history" lesson you attempted doesn't impress me as much as the books I have on the subject of mixing between Blacks and Indians. Of course, whites mixed with Indians (perhaps even on a larger scale) due to the population proportion and the LAW imposed by the goverment that prevented the mixing of the races due to the fear that they would indeed rebell against white slaveowners. MY point is, there was a lot of mixing bewteen Native Americans and Blacks/Africans; not as much as white (maybe) but more than "history" would give exact credit to. Anyway, I don't remember picking up any books at the library on the subject of "Native Americans" written by a NOBODY (who is probably not even a true Native) called "Chief Thunder" . So stop watching "Pocahantas" and silly movies about Native Americans before you assume one of their monickers and advise other people how to post.

An Observer,

Observe this, A Black father and a Japanese mother does not equal 1/16th Black.

My 2 cents, Just a Friend and Jay the Hapa,

No offense but none of you know a damn thing about the Native American tribes or their history. At best all you know of is the actions of one or two tribes from over a hundred.
First, I would like to make it very clear that the Native American people are not one hegemonous group or nation or even one blood line. The various tribes and various regions the tribes inhabited all have very different histories and in most cases culturally share very little between each other.
The first inaccuracy that needs to be clarified is that the amount of intermixing between whites and Native Americans is on a much greater scale then with black people simply due to numbers, history and greater political contact. The intermixing has been going on since the French trappers went west in the 17th century. and continued into the present day. Sorry but there was never any sweeping belief in both blacks and Indian peoples allying against the cruel white man. It makes for a nice story but not history.
The history with black people varies from tribe to tribe. They were both kind and cruel. The Seminole and portions of the South-Western tribes mixed a great deal with black people because at different times they had similar political goals and those areas had increased contact. Some blacks went on to be chiefs and tribal elders. Yet at the same time many Native American tribes in the East, North-East and portions of the Plains also owned black slaves. Other tribes made it a point to be especially cruel to captured blacks. There is historically no set rule as far as interaction with Native Americans goes.
The North Eastern tribes and the "5 civilized tribes" in many ways eventually assimilated within white America while other tribes of the Plains and Black Hills attempted to resist Amerian encroachment. This is also due to harsher policies of the late 19th century coinciding with contact with these tribes.
My point is that Native American's are not one people. The only similarity among the nations is a varying degree of friction with American expantion. This ranged from cultural assimilation to all out genocide. They all acted in different ways and have vary different histories simply beacuse they were all quite different. It is a silly notion to think that Native American history has any sweeping rules when it came to contact with other cultures. They were quite cruel to one another much less blacks and whites. So please read up before you comment.

"Asian American Male" (yeah, right!)
You're just jealous because you know it's true. It would be impossible for YOU to claim Native American heritage. In reality, the jig is up! You whites should STOP POSING AS ASIANS! Stop trying to create problems.

Observer Alicia Keyes don't look white or look as if she could ever pass for white. Her butt and lips and skin color gives her away but I think Jennifer Beals could have easily passed as a white actress/person.

Tell Me Why

Asian American Male beat me to the answer. I was going to say also that about whites wanting scholarships that are aimed for minorities.

Like in that movie with Rae Dawn Chong, "Soul Man" LOL

I had several white classmates apply for native american scholarships and grants. They didn't get them though but got pissed when their applications got rejected.

They needed more proof than just the fact that their Uncle Ted told them that he thinks their great, great grandmother's cousin was Gerinomo.

How's that for family relations.    Thursday, October 18, 2001 at 23:18:50 (PDT)
Jay the hapa...
you know jacksquat about Native Amer history. Check out the history of N.A. and African slaves. There was and still is today large populations of the offspring in Louisiana and the entire Gulf Coast. Native Americans had a great deal of admiration and respect for the African slave because of the way the slaves endured the savage treatment by the Pale Face.

All African Americans are mixed. There are a few African Americans who can pass for looking like white. Look at Alicia Keys for an example. She's almost look like a white if she has blonde hair. As for Kimora Lee Simmons looking almost like an asian, she's probably 1/16 black.

Jeff Chan:

Pretty sad state of affairs regarding your in laws. Many people think that whites only have this attitude towards African Americans. As your post clearly indicates it is not true. But, it is still difficult to comprehend in this day and age. No wonder, many Arab Americans in Louisiana try to pass for white, if they are well endowed with appropriate features.

Tell Me Why:

The answer to your question is simple. Claiming American Indian heritage allows you to enjoy all the benefits afforded to minorities (affirmitive action, special scholarship) without the baggage that comes with claiming that you are part black (one drop rule and the possibility that your children may turn out darker than "normal.") Claiming American Indian heritage means that you can have your cake and eat it too!!!
