WHAT YOU SAY

[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Babypolarbear (what a cute name!) and the truth:

I've been following the argument with great interest. I think there's truth to what you are both saying.

Babypolarbear, I definitely agree with what you say about how people are probably more attracted to others who them perceive as having similar features at some level than what media dictates as beautiful, especially when it comes to the opposite sex.

For instance, I tend to prefer very slim men with huge eyes because I'm kinda like that myself. No matter what, I cannot find men like Brad Pitt attractive even tho' this is what media "dictates." I tend to prefer men like the British actor Hugh Laurie even tho' no one raves over his looks.

But when it comes to women, I find it easier to admire someone who doesn't look exactly like me. Lucy Liu is very different from me, but I admire her very chiselled features even if she has "small" eyes. I thought she was the prettiest out of the 3 angels even tho' she had smaller eyes. (And no, it's not because I want to promote Asian beauty!)

However, I would say that society tends to favour those who conform to contemporary trends of beauty. It is these people who will have an easier time being promoted. It really all depends on timing. In late 18th century England, for instance, a very tall and skinny woman would have been considered mofo ugly: these women were almost always presented as sour and bitter old maids in popular literature. In other words, any of our supermodels today would have been considered damn ugly by those folks. Similarly, voluptuous women over a size 12 would have been considered beautiful in the 1950s, the heyday of actresses like Marilyn Monroe. It took a lot of effort to package Audrey Hepburn in the late 50s and early 60s to turn her from skinny geek to bombshell. Right now, the skinny woman is in and I dare say tho' that the pendulum will inevitably swing back to favor the larger woman.

All of this might have some bearing on whom men choose to pick up since men are very conformist. But it won't dictate everything. Who doesn't know some women deemed gorgeous by contemporary standards who are not married despite wanting it--like tall and skinny Ann Coulter?

The Truth,
I agree with some of what you say, but the idea of bigger eyes and smaller noses being universally attractive is a completely false and inaccurate statement.

Amongst europeans for many centuries, the classical greco-roman features were considered beautiful. These features are characterized by sharp, angular features, and a long, often angular nose (what You might consider big)

I personally dislike girls with small noses. I prefer girls with longer noses, slightly downturned. That is just my opinion, however, don't assume that which you like or perhaps are accustomed to thinking of as beauty is indeed beauty when in fact it may just be a fashion of the times and place in which you happen to find yourself in.

This brings to mind something I read about the Romans some time ago. After the Romans had conquered most of europe, it became fashionable for roman women to wear lockes of blond hair taken from captured north european slaves in their hair. I guess this must have been before hair coloring was invented.

so you have small eyes? Hmmm...Is that why you don't agree with me on anything when I say that small eyes are universally thought of as unattractive?

Can you tell me what the "ideal" female facial features are and why they are considered ideal?
Also, give me a culture that believes that small eyes, and large noses are attractive.

Anyway, there are so many things that define beautiful, not just proportion, symmetry, skin tone, cultural standards, etc. Duh, we all know that.
There are things that are considered IDEAL no matter what culture you're from. Who would ever consider Selma Hayek or Christy Turlington ugly? No one unless they're envious of their features. Those two women are considered beautiful by any cultures' standards. Babies stare at attractive people longer and show favouritism towards attractive people they don't go by society's standards. We do have an innate sense of what is beautiful on the outside. Don't get mad at me just because I said that small eyes are considered an unattractive feature by any culture's standards and probably by babies too.

the truth,

Looks do matter to a certain extent and in a certain period on ones life. But the real truth is that everyone is going to get old and ugly in the end.

At the peak of most people sucess or power in society, they are actually quite old and past the peak of beauty. Of course if your in entertainment outward beauty will always be important.

Plastic surgery is really a boost for confidence. Having worked in the field and observing reconstructive surgery in NYC, I can attest to the fact that Dermatologist will screen you to ensure that you understand how subjective the results of the procedures are going to be.
