WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
so tell me , Geoff DB, which one is a stereotype and which one is a generalization, or both, when you say two of these things: "In general, woman are better problem solvers, can move discussions along more smoothly and are less likely to fight when other alternatives are available." AND " Women have a knack for detecting other partys' true intentions. It's in their nature." Also, stereotypes are stereotypes. They don't solely use on race only.

"The Asian applicants that I have seen while at my Bay Area law firm have been equally split between men and women. However, a greater percentage of the women have been hired than men. Moreover, a greater percentage of the women make it to their third year here."
The situation described by Bay Area Lawyer sounds true. This means that Asian men have to work at becoming SMARTER, not simply working harder.

TexAsian:
I merely state the RELATIVE strengths/weakness of males and females, especially AM and AF attorneys ...
AM: values autonomy, dominance, control; resents subordination; introspective, reserved, critical; slower emotional development vis-a-vis females (pure biology);
AF: values team-work, being of service; seeks harmony, conformity; adaptive, talkative; devoted to obligation; patient with details; endures long harsh relationships
It follows that AM attorneys would be better adapted to solo-practice or prosecutorial roles; AF's would adapt better to the law firm environment.
In any event, I'm pleased to see so many bright AA's in law ... male or female. Good luck at the BIGLAW.

"I don't have a problem with stererotypes; "stereotypes" exist because most members of the relevant group exhibit common traits. Asians are good at math; blacks can dance; Jews have knack at making money."
hahaha...very funny. If blacks are so good at dancing, then why do so many people laugh at me when I go out clubbing Saturday nights. Well, maybe not everybody.
Anyway...
Stereotyping is one thing; generalizing is another matter. The two are not necessarily the same. Stereotyping connotes negative impressions based on racial belief perpetuation. Stereoptypes are rarely positive. Generalizations, however, can be based on culture, religious, economic advantages and/or disadvantages, and physiology.
In general, woman are better problem solvers, can move discussions along more smoothly and are less likely to fight when other alternatives are available. Women do mature faster than men. Women see through more bulls*** than men do. Women have a knack for detecting other partys' true intentions. It's in their nature. This is not meant to demean men. Men are very good, highly capable in many professions; women tend to be better in certain professions.
I'm not a lawyer. My job is corporate operations and I routinely examine legal documents and interact with attorneys.
In law firms, you have managers, litigators and negotiators. Women are generally more apt particularly in negotiating because turf battles - which men love and cherish - tend to distract your attention from the goal at hand: get a reasonable settlement for your client; use as less resources as possible to gain a favorable outcome for your client. The client is happy and the firm makes money and gains a good reputation, thereby strengthening and potentially widening it's client base.

"I would guess that AM's make better solo's and prosecutors; that AF's make better law firm associates."
That's so interesting! Why do you think so?

Statistics show a lot more Asian women marry non-Asians than white women marry Asian men.

All stereotypes, and all true ...

Isn't it also possible that some of there are a number of NON-Asian women who took Asian last names after they got married, so Gibson's stat doesn't include that as well? I would think that the above effect balances out.

Poltical Observer,
The person who makes stereotypical statements usually don't think that they're stereotypical. Asians are as diverse as any other race. Asian women are so as well.
Let me recommend taht anyone who makes any summary statements about a race or gender identify themsleves: what race are you and what gender. Because I think that it helps see who is more credible or not. Just like, if I were to draw a conclusion about Irish men (since I am neither), no one would consider my opinion credible.
