WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Chris,
You sound like another bay area communist: "You shouldn't chase after material items and status." Last I checked that's what America was all about -It's what makes this place great. BTW, How big is your condo or apartment in Palo Alto Chris -What 700 sq. ft? Wow, what a winner, congrats. I have lived in that part of town too and I can say I have hardly known any Asians who actually have houses there. It is so pathetic that you don't see what a crappy lifestyle you and other Asians live in the Bay. If you like living in a shoebox, move to NY. At least NY has some character, charm and entertainment.
And as far as your comparison goes is Santa Monica affluent? Not really, not to me at least, parts are but for the most part it is slummy. Palo Alto is more akin to a place like Brentwood maybe. But Brentwood is old wealth unlike the new wealth, which dominates the bay area. In the bay area you could pay a 1/2 million $s for a house and end up living next to some hillbilly with a broken down truck parked on his dilapidated front lawn. He probably just sat tight and watched his property value quadruple in a matter of 10 years and now you have to live next to this low class blue-collar worker for life -hehe. You never find that in the nicer parts of LA, because it is more established wealth or "old money." People either make the big bucks to live in nice places or live in sub par neighborhoods. That's the problem with bay area housing, no matter how much $ you pay you never know who is going to be lurking in your neighborhood thus it’s always a big gamble.
As far as your overgeneralizations go regarding how Asians are viewed in LA, are you seriously telling me they don't exist in the Bay Area as well? You're killing me... The Asian community in Los Angeles consists mostly of white-collar professionals in all industries as well as entrepreneurs, not just in tech, like the Bay. Being able to survive in a white man's world you say? Chris, is that a major accomplishment in your book? You need higher aspirations. Chris, LA is not for the weak. Those who make it here make it big and those who don't go somewhere else. You choose to go somewhere else, hence I rest my case. Now go and spend all the big tech money decorating your little cubicle of a condo, I am sure it is quite nice and quaint as is everything in the little bay area. I'm going to go take a dip in my jacuzzi now and then go for a swim. Yeah, LA life sure suuuucks... Poor you, I pity you. I'll say hi to the ladies for you. Oh, I’m sorry I’m not supposed to talk about evil material items am I? Ok, sorry I’ll see you in class, Ebonics 101, at “prestigious” and liberal Berkeley on Monday morning. As if going to a certain university has anything to do with how much money you are going to make later on in life.
It depends on you my friend and your ability to get ahead, not necessarily the degree. I know Berkeley and Stanford grads that have not amounted to anything in life so there goes that argument –You have so many preconceived notions of how life should be. Someday you will wake up. LA is #1, sorry if the reality hurts and you don’t want to accept it.

"Screw that, TSJ!!! No way in hell I'd want to live in Kansas Crap City (Kansas is a flat piece of shit) or Cold Ass Chicago!!!"
Haha... I haven't been to either place, but I heard KC ain't bad. I have heard about that riverside promenade being a really cool area. Chicago is a nice place, but it sure is damn cold.

Man, Chris. That was absolutely poignant. I couldn't have said it better myself.
"What is your obsession with El Monte? I live in the SGV and I have never heard of any problems in that area. In fact, Asian investment is increasing there. You just want to bash LA, so you're using a small, obscure city to make everyone think that the SGV is dangerous. Nice try. Those of us who live here know better."
If El Monte is such a small, insignificant city, how come the news always talks about them? The same goes for Compton, Long Beach, Hawaiian Gardens, etc.
