WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
"the rivalry between hong kongers and taiwanese people is based on something much greater than girls and money."
Are you referring to the people actually in Taiwan and HK or between the groups in America? In America, it's all about the Benjamins. Like my man, Biggie Smalls said, "Money, hoes, and clothes... all HK and Taiwanese people know." haha

"Anyways, I get along with HK people just fine, but not with Taiwanese. Taiwanese are a bit too uptight and snobby for me. As far as adaptation goes, HK people have the upper hand. Most can also speak fluent Mandarin as well as Cantonese and English. Taiwanese can't speak Cantonese worth a damn, and their English is more broken. It all has to do with linguistics. Cantonese is more like English, which is forceful. Mandarin is more fluid, so it is hard for them to adjust."
True, most Taiwanese I've met are snobby and dislike the Cantonese speakers. They say we are rude but it's more than that. I think its ENVY and nothing else. Like you said, we have an upper hand on things. Besides, most Taiwanese people come from elite backgrounds so I don't see any good reasons for them to b*tch about us. I'm guessing besides the rivalry of girls and money, Taiwanese are also competing with HKers for power or influence in the Chinese communities, which usually involves businesses and maybe politics.
A few years ago, I use to work in a predominantly Taiwanese neighborhood in NY. And let me tell you, these people are just as rude as the Cantonese. They were always moaning and groaning that the Cantonese are bad in this and that, but in reality these people had serious superiority complexes. The Cantonese might be rough and uneducated in the eyes of the Taiwanese, but at least we don't b*tch about other people like they do. My Mandarin isn't that great to begin with, but I could pick up their conversations about us, especially when they have something bad to say! =P

LSD,
There are 5 KK stores now. The one in the WTC was destroyed in 9/11. www.krispykreme.com.
KK is brand protecting if they only open 100's stores in the next 3 years.
Donuts is a poor man's food like Fried Chicken. They are trying to upscale their image.
The Chinese 5 neccessity. Food (rice + vegatable), Clothes, Fuel, and Home. Business in these area will have a good chance of making it through bad economic situations. But they are also extremely competitive
