"When it comes to Chinese, shoot, Asians in general, in America, Cantonese rule! The truth is in numbers."

Hehe...Hell yeah. Every big and major city in America is populated with Cantonese. SF, NY, LA, Seattle, Chicago, San Diego..etc, we're there!

Cantonese speakers dominate the Asian populations outside of Asia. Go to Southeast Asia, most Chinese are Cantonese speaking. Go to Europe, most Asians are again Cantonese speakers. Go to parts of Africa, and again, you find mostly Cantonese speakers. Go to Latin America, and again Cantonese speakers dominate. Finally America and Canada....need no further explaining...haha... Btw, all of the Southern Chinese from the Canton province represent 99.9% of the Chinese outside of China. Cantonese, Toi San, Hakka and Chiu Chou. All of them speak Cantonese although they're slighty different from one another. AMAZING!

One thing tho....quantity doesn't mean quality. Japanese, Koreans, Taiwanese and Northern Mainlanders have the wealth and education. Cantonese groups including HKers lag a bit.

Canto folks need to diversify more if we're gonna achieve our mighty status! We dominate in numbers, but we could just dominate PERIOD! It's only a matter of time...hahaha

"have you ever eaten at that one hunan restaurant in chinatown that always has a line of white people in front of it? is it any good? what's up with it?"

Yeah! That's one of the ones I'm talking about. I see it all the time. I just pass by, and look in. It is super small too. It must take hours to cycle through so many people. I guess when you are on vacation, time isn't an issue.

"And those who are thrust into a situation where they need to become fluent (ie. doing business with clients who only speak that language, got a girlfriend who can't speak your own language, went to study abroad, etc.) live up to that demand within a few months."

Yeah, you are right on that. Some people can go to a native country without a clue about the language, but since they are forced to learn, they will very quickly. However, what pisses me off are those people who come to the states, and live in their own little ethnic neighborhoods (i.e. Chinatown), and never learn a lick of English! They hang around their own people all day, so they don't need to learn. Whatever happened to the CA state proposal for making English mandatory?

My and aunt and uncle have lived near SF Chinatown (Nob Hill) for over 30 years, and don't know even the most basic of English! That is a disgrace! My other aunt and uncle have lived near Oakland Chinatown (Alameda) forever, and they don't know squat either! They even had to ask me translate basic vocabulary for them for court documents!

If you come to the states, at least try to learn the language.

TSJ,

"Just look at all the HK singers singing in Mandarin, but not vice versa."

What are you talking about. A lot of HK stars are from Taiwan or China, go to HK to start their careers in entertainment.

Ever hear of Faye Wong.

Most Chinese people in Asia don't have stigma about learning dialects. They go to a new place. The boss speaks another dialect. Guess what, you're going to learn a new dialect.

From Taipei to HK to Shanghai. I keep hearing the same thing from native, with no lingustic training, about learning dialects. It's easy.
