WHAT YOU SAY

I agree the pageant was a total joke! just like within 9 mins 75 contestants were narrowed down to 10! Mis India didnt look indian, Miss CHina could barely speak english, Miss RUssia [who won] had a freaking translator, for god sakes, the winner should be able to speak english!! I think Miss Panama should have been 3rd runnerup instead of miss china, cause her answer wasnt all that good, compared to other contestants. I think the whole pageant was completely backwards

The Chinese Miss Universe should of have an interpretor to translate her broken english.

Was it pride that prevented her from speaking in Chinese?

"O All My friends can do that"

"But Look at ME"

"But nobody TOLD Me"

Waving like a idiot and not know what the hell to do. I was surprised that she even made it to the finals.

Every female in that pagent either look like Jennifer Lopez or Penelop Cruz look alike. Especially Miss Russia.

?

Good question:) Yeah, most of us are wondering about that too. And the rise of anorexia and bulimia. And the rise of B.D.D (Body dysmorphic disorder)...

I call it the Body Gestapo, but with a twist. Those forced into marginalized concentration camps (figuratively speaking) are the ones who do NOT look like they're Auschwitz victims and who do NOT look like the cookie-cutter mold of what is presumed Aryan or near-Aryan beauty: i.e, slim, chiselled features, relatively fair skin, etc.

One popular theory is that now that men are threatened by women making strides in the corporate world and everywhere else, there must be another way to repress them. And that's by creating a look that only a few are born with (BTW, tall and skinny was considered ugly for a good period of time).
But I should add that if they reversed the situation by making the Roseanne Barr look the only acceptable one, things would be no better. Again, only a few can achieve that.

Well, whatever the real reasons are, my suggestion is to burn all present fashion magazines and put those fashion editors in a crazy camp before they do any more damage to young women. If we must have modelling, let's have some real women in modelling for a change like in the pre-supermodel days.

P.S. BTW, doesn't it say something when many young girls aspire nowadays to become a model? "Actress" used to be first choice--something which requires some talent and literacy, but now they don't even want any semblance of a BRAIN.

Asian Dominatrix,

Yes that is true, many cultures nowadays seem to have very similar and very rigid and very unnatainable beauty standards. Most women in the US could not attain the 5'10, 120lb look of models from magazines. Most Chinese girls that I know are more like 5'3 or so, have yellower skin. And a lot of the contestants in the pagent looked so much the same, very tall and thin with long dark hair. The woman from India hardly looked Indian, she had pale skin, light eyes, very thin. So why do our emobidments of the "perfect woman" look so different from the average populace?

too thin,

Actually she is 5'9" and 110 lb. Too bad they don't give measurements anymore at these beauty contest.

too thin,

The Chinese Miss Universe is 5'7", I believe. Go check out the website. (I don't remember what it is, but if you search Google.com, you will find the site easily.)

BTW, you mention that the Miss Universe--if she is 6' and 120lbs--is "hardly representative of the average Chinese woman." But the same could be said for white models/actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow, Erin O'Connor, Stella Tennant, Jodie Kidd, etc. Since when were these women representative of white women, who are supposed to be 5'4" and 140lbs on average?
