"I thought the Miss China was a joke and stereotyped herself with that Chinese dress and bad stupid broken english."
Why don't I see you complain about Miss Korea with her Han-bok outfit? Wouldn't that make her look stereotyped too? I thought Miss China's dress gorgeous. And she was wearing "cheong-sam." Chinese dresses are standard outfit in Miss Hong Kong, Miss Chinatown, and other Chinese pageant. So why can't Miss CHina wear it to represent her culture and nation???
"They of course couldn't get an Asian from an non-communist nation because of China favored nation status so the whole damn thing was a joke."
Miss China was more spontaneous and out going than contestants from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, KOrea, and Japan
"Tired of the communist nations getting more attention that the demogratic nations."
What does politics has to do with it? Miss Russia won and Russia is no longer communist.

"Thus she screwed it up with her thick Beijing Accent english and screwed up her chances of winning the contest."
What the hell do you expect from someone who was born in a non-English speaking nation and learned to speak only with their native tougne. It's not Miss China's fault that she wasn't a stupid, self-hating, whitewashed bananas like you who were born and raised in the US and don't have a clue about your cultural and heritage while being ashamed of people of your own race.
Hey, at least Miss China had great pride for representing her country. And what did you do to represent your Asian American community may I ask? If you think you are so damn better than Miss China then why don't you enter the pageant and make a name for yourself huh?

"Thus she screwed it up with her thick Beijing Accent english and screwed up her chances of winning the contest."
Dear Mr. or Ms. Beauty contest blues, the Chinese contestant was from Shanghai. That makes it rather impossible for her to have a "beijing accent". Thank you for the false information. Next time around, however, it seems possible that the contestant representing China will have a "strong beijing accent".

if other English speaking nations are fully aware that languages other than English may be spoken and America is just a bunch of ignorant monolingual bastards, how come the ATM I usually go to in my little East Coast university town is octolingual? didn't see one of those in England, Singapore, Hong Kong, Barbados, Ireland, etc. yup, only in the country of rednecks with shotgun racks on their pickups can people from so many different countries all unite in harmony to withdraw cash in their native language.
When I studied in Japan, I had a Polish friend who spoke really bad English. Japanese was good enough, though. But Japanese people always got pissed at him that he didn't understand English.

You should of seen the pageant because Miss China could'of had a Chinese translator but didn't maybe due to her damn pride or arrogance.
Thus she screwed it up with her thick Beijing Accent english and screwed up her chances of winning the contest.
The way I would describe her answers since you didn't see it is like a ditzy blonde trying give a answer. It was a accented, slurred and cut-up - a total mess. Maybe the audience got a good laugh but it only served to stereotype the Asian female and asians has not having any grammer sense at all.

Shallow Hal got really bad reviews. People say that it is really shallow, calling fat women buffaloes, ugly women, hyenas, etc. But I guess they missed the real point.

On the MS UNIVERSE posting -- let's just note that it's Americans who expect the rest of the globe to be able to speak English - other English speaking nations are fully aware that languages other than English may be spoken!

For people talking about Miss. Universe,
I just stumbled in here--I guess the Miss. Universe pageant was on a while ago or something? I didn't see it, but I heard Miss. Russia won. However, I am appalled at some people being angry that Miss. China couldn't speak English. Why does it matter? It's a Miss. UNIVERSE pageant, not a Miss. AMERICA pageant--the world doesn't revolve around English-speaking countries. The pageant is supposed to be special because it is to represent all women of all nations, which includes differences in appearance and language. Just my 2 cents.

Locke Maison,
My mother always says that beauty is as beauty does. Too many people determine beauty by a person's appearance. If a person doesn't treat you right they start to look like Godzilla. You should watch the movie "Shallow Hal". That is the message this movie was trying to convey.
