WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
I agree with Asian Dominatrix and others here, the media has way too much influence on ethnic beauty standards. Most white women are just average looking, but the media selects the most beautiful 1 out of every 100,000 white women, and transmits that image to millions of people via tv, movies, photos, and magazines.
But then again, you have to realize that about 70 percent of the American population is white. If you want to sell in the media world, you have to target the largest population segment.
One question. Are there any famous glamorous Asian models out there, or any media that presents it, that is NOT porn related?

Asian Dominatrix,
Chicago, which city did you see the play in. I saw the one in NYC, I did not see any asian dancers. Could have been their day off.
I actually met the pimp from Miss Saigon in NYC. He was an immigrant from China. He was only in the country for 10 years, but his NYC English accent was perfect. A credit to his acting ability. He told me he develop the accent by believing in the myth of speaking with marbles in his mouth. He put marbles in his mouth and practiced for 6 months. I was cracking up when he told me that.
I don't like the story much either. But I see it to support the asian in the cast.

Maybe it's not cause you're white, but just that you're dense...to think that the media has no influence on your life.

For some, the media is a handy excuse when there is no other that's acceptable. For others, it's just proof that average people are idiots.

"But at the same time, they are made to act like such stupid buffoons--ways in which even some of the silliest white actors are not made to act."
What do you expect? It's a COMEDY! They are not nearly as silly as Jim Carrey or Tom Green. Oh, but then again, those two aren't Americans either. They are from Canada. =P

Census Taker,
Ah yes, the tool shed scene. That was how it played out that they both discovered they were de facto swingers.
The movie doesn't make my must see list either.
Asian American Male,
Thanks for the title. I never finished watching it. Now I know.

Asian American Male,
Forgot to add that I've only seen Madame Butterfly on TV. I have always refused to buy tickets for that opera. Also, I refuse to go to Miss Saigon, which is only a lowbrow version of Madame Butterfly.
Get your sister to become a screenwriter for TV sitcoms if she likes that sort of thing. God knows, we could use more AF's and AM's in the business!

Asian American Male,
What I meant about MNW in One Night Stand was that her subplot did not receive as much emphasis in the movie. (Again, however, I did not actually see this movie but have only heard about it.)Most of the movie was focusing on the WF/BM relationship.
"THe world looks at WF with envy." I know what you mean. It's interesting cos' when you look around at WF, most are pretty mediocre looking--just like women of ANY other race! The WF who look like the real shiznit, Kate Beckinsale or Christy Turlington, for instance, are quite rare. Folks like Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker--the vast majority of WF's--are about as mediocre as you can get, being short and chunky. All in all, ain't that many WF's 5'10" and 120 lbs so I wish they would stop talking about WF's as if they were all tall and beautiful.
I agree that Asians in Asia ought to stop buying into this whole white superiority crap, especially when there are more and more tall and beautiful Asian women around. We ain't all 5' nothing chihuahuas. Just the other day in Chicago, I saw 3 tall Asian chicks (5'9" to 5'10") who looked like models--boy, did I envy them--who made all the WF's around them (5'3" to 5'4") look short, fat and unfashionable.
If Madame Whitey is going to make it, it's probably going to have to be on off-Broadway. It's going to have to be a parody of Asian and white stereotypes too, so that no one gets too upset. There will be new elements. For instance, a bigoted Southern hick made rich who's going to play the WF's father, for instance. The AM's traditional father is also going to feature. Finally, I want Margaret Cho, who's funny as hell, to play the "big bad Chinese mama" sort of AF who drags her AM from the WF. Can't think of anyone to play the WF, but she's going to have to be a comedian too...
