WHAT YOU SAY

[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Hi,
Im not asian but i could relate. I just have one thing to say. It's not about goth or prep at all. I see it as being a comformist or as being who you feel like being on any given day. Just go with how you want to look like. The 'goth' tag is given too lightly. Goth is defined as something more than a fashion. We just made it a fashion just like the majority of things. Don't worry about being different or 'abnormal'. Instead embrace the fact that you're an original indvidual. The last thing you want is to be a clone. I for one dont tag myself as 'goth' while other people might.

To 'confident ABC', I'm not too clear about what your trying to say. But if your thinking that gothic people are linked to the columbine high school shootings, the media have given Goth peoples the perspective that we're linked to Satanism. I'm sure there are some, but these are VERY rare. Most of the goth's are hardcore Christians or many are like the one's that the other writer have described.
To 'hehehehe' I usually don't dress up for Halloween, unless you count putting cat ears on my head for the holiday dressing up, then i have dressed for the occasion.
To 'AC dropout', yes i am in America. I live in florida where it's all bright and sunny. Fun.
Thank you to everyone who wrote. This is very inspiring.

goth girl,

Thank you for being yourself. No it's not alright to be goth, but why should you give a fk? Many asians still heavily descriminate, even against people who fit the ideal preppie genius profile desired, often with contempt, so it doesn't matter in your case. You're not even in the lion's den of asian competition in the community. Asians like to do the math:

Dark + Death = not nice
Light + Life = nice
Skater + attitude = bad girl
Polo shirt + MBA = good girl

People in general are terribly conformist and hopelessly 2-dimensional in thought. Even the most academically talented persons are incapable of deeper poetic stratifications of the heart and mind to appreciate differences.

Also you are not shooting for the ASIAN BIG 3:
Medical, Engineering, Business

Goth is fine, but how do you dress when its not Halloween?

funny you should mention this --I think goth dressing is great and if it also fits your personality, then I think you should go with it (unless you mean like Marilyn Manson crap which is just really ugly and gross) --on the other hand this is coming from someone over 30 so maybe you might think this advice over. back in the 80's, "goth" was my favourite style, but since it wasn't my personality, I didn't really get into it. but as a "look" -I really think it's superbly stylish. If I wasn't working in a regular job, I might like to do it even now. But as I said, I wouldn't want to create a false impression.

to asian goth girl,

don't be worried about being " abnormal " you'll always be strange. any of us goths can tell you that. one of my really good friends is in her late thirties, chinese, living in sf and was always in the punk scene and then moved over to the goth scene. we've all always been damn spooky! and people just have to deal with it. they're conservative and they want you to be too. they don't want you to think outside the box. don't give in! if they don't like your style screw them....they don't understand the pleasure and the depth of the darkside.

there's more of us out here.
as well as alot of black goths too!
they should have a website called - The Other Goths!

to asian goth girl:

I don't know how much my opinion counts for, but as an asian I, for one, love goths! I personally feel that people who are characterized as goths are least racist and open to new things. The goths I know are friendly to asians and we're cool. You should enjoy the attention that you receive. Your antagonists are just jealous of your liberty.

asian goth girl,

Where are you in the USA? In NYC I see quite a few asians into the gothic look. Hang around the NYU campus/ Villiage / NoHo area, throw a rock in the air and you'll hit a dozen of them by random chance.

There was even this Swedish/Korean Hapa girl in my highschool that was into the Gothic. Even under all the dark make up you could tell she was quite the looker.

The Gothic look is pretty much a club thing here. If you're walking around in the daytime like that, it can be pretty intimidating to the average joe.
