WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
I think Musharraf is having a very positive influence on Pakistan right now and I wish him success. He has been on the case of regulating religious schools and cracking down on terrorist groups even before Sept. 11 and has placed himself in a great deal of personal danger in taking the course of actions he has after Sept. 11. He has made one third of all Pakistan cabinet members women and made it manditory for fedral government. He has reformed the financial loop holes in their banking system and for the first time has dragged tax evaders off to jail. He has lifted all censorship from the press and has cracked down on police corruption. He has regulated the trucking industry and spent more on the countries infrastruture in 1 year than 5 years prior. He has even cleaned up national parks and introduced an American county system to local government. He has changed the high school from the English 10 grade system to the American 12 grade system. He has made child labor a federal crime and has made it illegal to have children under 15 out of school. He has invested 1 billion US into making Pakistan a future fish exporter and will be the first poltician to dismantle the old English railroad system and place a more modern Korean design in place.
He is probably the first truly honest and egalitarian leader South Asia has had in a long while. I think much of his success is due to the fact that he is not a politician but a honest soldier with liberal views and absolute power. He also only lead a coupe against the former leader Nawaz Sharrif after he tried to have Musharraf killed. He is supressing extremism and promoting modernism all while keeping his finances open to the public. They say that an honest and competant dictator is the most effective form of government even though it is not a popular political style in the west. I think Musharraf is good proof of this. Look at our own government. It has been a long while since a single person or single adminstration has wielded so much power. This was due to the crisis we faces as a nation. As a nation Pakistan has been facing one political crisis after another for the last 20 years and it has been in need of reform for a great long while.
Beyond that, his international savvy and charisma is something I have never seen in any politician of his make. He is a military dictator who has wowed America, China, UK and the entire EU. So much so that old cold Russia has been attempting to bridge thier historic distance from Pakistan. Even India seem to take a liking to his honest and blunt style even if they don't agree with him on several issues.
Not since Prince Bismark, does it seem, we have witnessed a politician who can play all sides of the game so well.

Seaman,
Once again, your insight is much appreciated. There is little room for me to disagree with your statements, they are very accurate and educated as usual.
I quite agree with your statement of Chinese-Indian relationships. Ironically enough, the reason these two nations can never be true allies is because they share too much similarities. Both are the pillars to Asian civilization, extremely proud, rightly so, of the 5000 years of history each has. Both are overpopulated, and poverty remains a major problem for both nations. However, both also strive to be self-sufficient and independent, charting out regions of influence, which leads to a lot of suspicion and competiton between the two.
I actually think Musharraf is a beneifical dictator for Pakistan. I am sure your knowledge is in far greater detail, but it seems to me that he is not a power-hungry dictator, but an honest general that was fed up with the misrule of the nation, and has gradually been pulling Pakistan towards a brighter future. What do you make of this argument?

World Traveler,
Not a disreguard for the justice system. Remember the premise of the situation was that I was wrongfully accused. We assume the system is not perfect to begin with, hence imperfect solutions are needed.
Justice doesn't equal individual rights.
Bribes and gifts are all the same. It is only a subjective laws that will distinquish them either as a crime or socially acceptable.
Tips are unheard of in Asia. It is not the norm. Anyway the order of magnitude is different when you want the audience of a political official. In the USA around $10,000 to $50,000 as campaign contribution should do it. In China it is around $100,000 RMB should also do it.
This is getting too off topic from the original conversation.
China is more stringent than other country when it comes to western looking foriegners having casual affairs with the native women. That's all. Doesn't have anything to do with dignity of anyone. Even though people my percieve it as such. It has more to do with xenophobic politics.
