JOHN M IINO

Profession: Lawyer
Birthplace: Los Angeles, California
Position: Partner in the Corporate Practice of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, Los Angeles

ohn Iino's day job may be working as a corporate transactional attorney in one of L.A.'s three legal colossuses, but his passion seems to be to serve the Japanese American community. He serves on the boards of directors of the Little Tokyo Service Center, the Japan America Symphony and Angel Harvest, Inc. He's also a member of many advisory boards and committees, ranging from the executive committee and Board of Directors of the United Way to the Board of Regents for Loyola Marymount University to the LA Chamber of Commerce to the Asian Advisory Committee for the Natural History Museum.
"With each successive generation of Japanese Americans, the sense of 'community' vanishes," laments Iino, the highest-ranking Asian in the 700-attorney office. "We have been given opportunities that were closed off to our parent's generation. Assimiliation and sucess, however, should not come at the expense of forgetting who we are and where we are from. Thus, it is especially important for the younger Nikkei to spend time serving the community to preserve our heritage."
