BRUCE NAKAO
Profession: Corporate Executive
Birthplace: California
Position: Chief Financial Officer, Adobe Systems
wo hundred people in seven finance departments report to Bruce Nakao. He was instrumental in pushing senior management to acquire Aldus, of Pagemaker fame, thus securing for Adobe the lion's share of the desktop publishing market. Nakao started as CFO in 1986. There were about 50 people employed then, one of which assisted Nakao. In fiscal '85, Adobe closed at $4.2 million; in '95, the company closed at $762 million.

From I-Tel to Dividend Industries to Ross Systems, Nakao has handled the financials from car, boat and plane leasing to real estate and financial software. Then Adobe called. "Who are they? Where are they?" Nakao wondered. "Look out your window," they replied. "We're across the street."

His family is from Bainbridge Island, just off the coast near Seattle, and he was born during their WWII internment. Currently, Nakao and a friend are building a house on the Sacramento River where he intends to indulge in a favorite pastime--flyfishing. "Wherever there's flyfishing, I'll go," Nakao says.
