ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES
Are AA Women the Real Victims of Prejudice?
sian women get a free ride at the expense of Asian men. That's the received wisdom here in the U.S. This belief appears premised on the suspicion that American society sees Asian women as sexy exotics in need of rescuing from the cold clutches of Asian men who don't know how to smile except evilly.
The real victim?
|

Credit Hollywood for its tireless casting of Asian women as sexual accessories to white heroes while suppressing the very existence of Asian men except as unsavory paper tigers. Credit too the TV networks that uncover bevies of talking Asian women but rarely their male counterparts.

In fairness this media fantasy of the Asian race was partly inspired by recent history. Devastated and impoverished Asian nations sent tens of thousands of war brides and orphans, followed by several million desperate immigrants willing to hock their identities while toiling to build new lives.

Male-dominated societies toast new women as exotic sexual prospects while suppressing new men as an exploitable lower class or even enemy aliens. The women get all the breaks and the men get all the lumps. Even worse, the women have their heads turned and adopt a scornful attitude toward their own men. So goes the complaint of some AA men.

The women have a different take. Sexual predators bearing insulting stereotypes must be fended off while coping with women who see them as unfair competitors. Add to that the pain of being scorned as sellouts by AA men for no more reason than their apparent welcome by American society. Worst of all, complain AA women, is being begrudged the right to take simple pleasure in their own identities. How much easier just to face straightforward racial prejudice!

Do Asian women really have an easier time in America? Or do they suffer from the double-whammy of insulting stereotypes from non-Asians and unfair persecution from Asian men?

WHAT YOU SAY

Well, I'm an Asian male. I'm very Americanized and I get this statement a lot, "You're not bad looking for an Asian guy." Sometimes I even get "Oriental" instead of "Asian guy". Yet, I do hear about how beautiful and sexy Asian women are and how good our food tastes. That's about it. People are actually also surprised that I play guitar and bass. I guess I'm also supposed to play only the flute or the violin or that funny looking Chinese guitar with only 4 strings. If it helps, I live in Texas. A very large state with a very large Asian community, yet thanks to the media, I can only do math, fight Kung Fu, or deliver noodles. People are actually surprised that I don't wear glasses. My point is that yes, Asian women are looked as sex objects while Asian men are looked as nerds and funny monkeys. I honestly don't even know which is worse. Asian women gets the "Me so horny" treatment while Asian men gets the bowing motion while making the Kung Fu noise treatment. What I'm mad about is that it's still OK to make fun of Asian people as it's OK to make fun Indians (east) and Arabs. I certainly know it's not OK to make jokes about African-Americans or Latin Americans. Maybe someday, we'll get there. By the way, I drive very well and I speak with no accent. I'm even a veteran of 2 wars in service of this country. Funny thing was that when I went to war, the people treated me with more respect than the people in this country did. Isn't it ironic, don't you think?

I think you make a good point about the difference between being seen as "sexy" verus "sexually available." In fact, I've known many AFs who will intentionally tone down their "sexiness" (i.e. dress more conservatively) or their behavior (i.e. not kissing or being even reasonably affectionate in public with a guy) due to the "sexually available" image the media has liked to use.
It's kind of a shame really because it seems to go against the grain of women having sexual freedom to be whom they want to be and love/show love & desire towards their mate of choice. Oh well, thanks again you stupid Media Moguls!

I do agree that the women who do choose for the WRONG reasons are wrong. However, the typical assumption by most (not all) of the guys on these boards is that any AF dating or married to a non-AM is a sell-out and automatically suspect. It was refreshing to hear him make that statement.
I wasn't trying to criticize Asian Guy Who Hates Lies--I just felt that his first point is one that isn't said enough in the GoldSea forums.
