Are AA Women the Real Victims of Prejudice?

sian women get a free ride at the expense of Asian men. That's the received wisdom here in the U.S. This belief appears premised on the suspicion that American society sees Asian women as sexy exotics in need of rescuing from the cold clutches of Asian men who don't know how to smile except evilly.
AA Woman
The real victim?

Credit Hollywood for its tireless casting of Asian women as sexual accessories to white heroes while suppressing the very existence of Asian men except as unsavory paper tigers. Credit too the TV networks that uncover bevies of talking Asian women but rarely their male counterparts.
In fairness this media fantasy of the Asian race was partly inspired by recent history. Devastated and impoverished Asian nations sent tens of thousands of war brides and orphans, followed by several million desperate immigrants willing to hock their identities while toiling to build new lives.
Male-dominated societies toast new women as exotic sexual prospects while suppressing new men as an exploitable lower class or even enemy aliens. The women get all the breaks and the men get all the lumps. Even worse, the women have their heads turned and adopt a scornful attitude toward their own men. So goes the complaint of some AA men.
The women have a different take. Sexual predators bearing insulting stereotypes must be fended off while coping with women who see them as unfair competitors. Add to that the pain of being scorned as sellouts by AA men for no more reason than their apparent welcome by American society. Worst of all, complain AA women, is being begrudged the right to take simple pleasure in their own identities. How much easier just to face straightforward racial prejudice!
Do Asian women really have an easier time in America? Or do they suffer from the double-whammy of insulting stereotypes from non-Asians and unfair persecution from Asian men?

Curious Girl,
well said. I went to school with Asian kids, my best friend was Asian in grade school, my first pediatrician was Chinese, etc. And that was when I was very young and living in the Midwest, where at that time there were very few Asians in that state and community. I never held the negative stereotypes about Asian men or Asian women. Maybe it comes from lack of exposure to people of other races, or maybe it is prejudice left over from the parents. Of course the media is a huge thing, but not everyone buys into everything the media says.

WM w/Hot Asian G/F,

If you were dating a Blonde WF, would you be saying "I see plenty of other women of all races who do that with their boyfriends."

Following your logice there are also plenty of women of all races who do not do that with thier boyfriends in public.

So she's not comfortable with public display of affection. So that is her nature. You could try to change her mind about public display of affection. But that will require an investment on your part.

"Why can't those idiots just understand she's my girlfriend and she loves me and not think that she's an Asian sex-kitten or something. Jeez louise!!!"

Your entire view of the situation is incorrect and will most likely be a sore spot in your relation with your gf if you continue to see it in this light. It's about making your gf feel comfortable and secure enough around you, so that see will not be self conscious of what other people might be thinking.

Last reason why she isn't kissing you in public is because she saw someone else she was interested in and did not want to ruin her chances with the other.

Huh? Uh oh, I think my English is getting worse. My point is, HK youth are presumably influenced by US media to a LESSER degree than ABC youth. And they get a lot friskier in public. So ABC girls must be getting all their moral restraint from somewhere, maybe it is the fear of being seen as easy. But I dunno about that one either, cuz ABC girls dress a lot less conservatively. Even over here, where the amount of skin they show off keeps fueling the stereotype among HK students that ABC exchange student girls are easy. So, no clue on the root causes. Back to square one.

I'm not expecting my girfriend to be "wearing a mini-skirt and trying to hump me in public." That is not what I'm talking about. I am talking about "reasonable affection" in public--ie a quick kiss or a hug. She'll hold hands, but if it comes to a kiss on the lips its always "wait until we get in the car--I don't want some idiots to think I'm some nympho Asian sex-kitten."

In private, my gal is open, sweet and very affectionate. But it frustrates me that she doesn't let me give her a reasonable kiss (NOT tongue-action or whatever) in public. I see plenty of other women of all races who do that with their boyfriends. She always says its because she doesn't want some guys to think the wrong thing about her.

Why can't those idiots just understand she's my girlfriend and she loves me and not think that she's an Asian sex-kitten or something. Jeez louise!!!

T.H. Lien,

Having lived in HK for awhile. I think what you are noticing cannot be totally blamed on westernization. If you think about it in the USA teenagers can neck in relatively private location. The population density of the HK and the lack of space for everyone to own a car, makes for these interesting public display of affection.
