ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES
COMING SHIFTS IN PACIFIC POWER BALANCE
f the outcome of the Cold War has shown one thing, it's that economic power begets military power -- and not vice versa.

Today American power is unrivaled, the product of three centuries of unbroken industrial and territorial expansion. A half century ago its sole Pacific rival was Japan, a nation that had begun building an industrial base a mere seven decades earlier. Today Japan is wealthy but stagnant and adrift, its spiritual and political back never having mended after having been shattered by World War II and subsequent occupation.

While not entirely writing off Japan's potential to pose new challenges, the U.S. has begun eyeing China as the next strategic rival.

Barely three decades after China began ditching its centralized command economy for the glories of capitalist wealth, most of its 1.25 billion citizens remain mired in an agrarian subsistence economy. But the 125 million Chinese participating in the industrial economy of the coastal regions have fueled China's drive for superpower status. By 2015 it will match the U.S. in GDP -- then double it by 2025. Militarily China has been a formidable land power since the Corean War. Now the Red Army is acquiring state-of-the-art warplanes, missiles and submarines. It has announced plans to send a man into space by 2005. China's overriding aim is to keep the Pacific from becoming an American pond.

Any shift in the Pacific power balance must also take into account the two Coreas, Taiwan and Russia. At any given time each of these nations are triangulating a course of maximum advantage with reference to the U.S., China and Japan. The precise posture these nations ultimately adopt may well tip the balance.

How will the Pacific power balance shift in the coming decades? What developments will pose the greatest threats to American power?

"Also in this country with a four percent asian population and a no-longer existing immigration of Asians..."
Huh? That is news to me. Last I heard, a week ago that the Asians numbers are increasing at the second fastest rate in the US, mostly due to increasing immigration from Asia. You have not done much thinking there.
"outmarriages will be inevitable because a minority doesn't want to be a minority forever and especially when a minority isn't being recognized or appreciated."
There will be no majority by 2050. There is no majority in California or New Mexico, and by next year, there would be no majority in Texas...unless one wants to claim as the white racists and anti-white folks do and claim that California is majority "non-white"...which means the so-called "non-whites" behave as a block...which is not true. If they did, we would not be having a white man as the mayor of Los Angeles.
"But you owe it to yourself and especially your parents and grandparents, etc. to try and make an effort to recognize their contributions to this country. don't make it where they never existed"
I agree.
"They're already invisible as it is. It's a burden. It's tiresome. I know. And all you want is refuge."
They are visible alright. That is why they are called visible minorities

Makadu,
"......."
I'm speechless. You took the words right out of my mouth. If I ccan speak that eloquently, that is... Bravo! I would like to hear a rebuttal from a white male and his 'Pocahontas'. Ooooohhhh.... I can't wait. =)
Also, let me just add that this white male inferiority complex also extends to Hispanic women too, but less with black American women, since they seem more masculine. I've observed however, that black women from AFRICA are indeed less 'masculine' in their behavior, i.e. less assertive, outspoken, etc... much like the geisha of the white man's dreams.
Props, Makadu

just thinking,
I agree the cultural and social responsibility of an immigrating minority group into the USA is not easy. USA is still of country of ideals. Granted there are many contradicting ideals in this country. But the USA tries to respect them all.
I don't have answers to people and relationships. I use to think IR was basically not good. But as I got married, had kids and gain more experience in life. And my new view is very individual base. People need to feel happy in life. If it mean they need to be in an IR relationship, that's that. Not every asian can have a healthy relationship with other asians.
In a past life, I did a lot of molecular biological research in "love" or pre-cursor amphetamine that caused euphoric feeling in the brain know as "love." It is easier to relate "love" to a drug induce "high" and "breakup blues" to substance "withdrawl." Not that it is answer to anything Asian. But it just make relationship part of life easier understand.
But as Makadu pointed out from humans are very complex indeed. Even from a molecular standpoint cannot explain humans most curious behaviors.

AC DC,
Yeah, I sell electric guitars. Asian Americans and Japanese are mostly the Asian clientele that I have. Actually, they are really the ones sustaining my hobby or my part time business. Many Asians who play or collect guitars buy the more expensive models, while many Whites are reluctant and buy budget models. This is just an observation from dealing with the 2 groups.
In addition, guitars made in Japan are far more superior than one made in the good ol' USA, but their resale value is less because we like to cheat! However, Japanese guitars are nicer and the workmanship is nothing but superb. Even guitar catalogs printed in Japan are far more attractive than ones printed here.
I think when China, HK and Asian America begin to wake up to smell of Rock n' Roll, I will be one of the first few to tap into the market.
A message to fellow Asian Americans: never underestimate the asians in asia nor the fobs in the united states. They can one day give you what you dreamed of or what you want!
Asian Americans and Japanese have the highest buying power!

Truth,
What you say is true. But, based on that definition, India is not a homogeneous country either. However, it does not have the same mix of races as the US: East Asian, South Asian, African, Hispanic and White European. Certainly China is nowhere near Japan or Korea.

Asian American Male,
How is China a homogeneous country? China is COMPLETELY UNLIKE tiny Japan and Korea, who are only the size of ONE Chinese province. I said ONE.
China has 56 ethnic groups, and great regional diversity, many different religions, many different climates, influence from SE Asian buddhist cultures, Western Islamic cultures, Indian cultures, Mongolian nomadic cultures.
Go read a book.

"I think that if the American who was fighting with the Taliban was other than white, like, say, Asian American, there wouldn't even be consideration as to whether he was 'misguided' or had 'youthful indiscretion'. It would only reflect poorly on all Asian Americans."
No, the white mobs would have beaten up the Asian Americans. If it was a black, the white mobs would have killed many of them. This is the white mentality. It has happened before in America.

I think your market analysis could be skewd. What instrument are you selling? Maybe only Japanese and American Asian are interested in those instruments. If you were making high quality zithers or pipa I'm sure some rich chinese musician would buy it from you. The only instrument that is total USA is the electric guitar. I'm not too sure rock music and the image of the rock musician has made it that far east yet. Most asian countries outside of Japan and Korean, only ballad singer make it big.
