ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES
LISA LING & RICK YUNE
(Updated
Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 06:06:54 PM.)
he's the most watched Asian woman on American TV. He's the year's hottest Asian American movie hunk. She's 26. He's 29. She's 5-5. He's 6-1. She's Chinese. He's Corean. Both are unquestionably American. She's daringly bubbly. He's recklessly intense. What makes them special to many AA minds is that they defied the odds and the unwritten laws of the American media to become the lone bona fide Asian American star couple.

Rick Yune was barely one wen his family left his native Seoul, Corea for Silver Springs, Maryland. His education has been enviably ivy-covered -- private schools topped off by a Wharton MBA. Then came a stint as a Wall Street stock trader and modeling for Versace and Polo. He made a memorable film debut in December 1999 as a young Japanese American husband accused of murder in Snow Falling on Cedars. Yune's character walks and gets the girl. A breathless Newsweek profile didn't hurt his career. His intense and classic Asian features add sizzle to The Fast and the Furious (2001) and will undoubtedly do the same for The Fence (2001).

Lisa Ling is a Sacramento native who got her start in TV at the age of 15 as a reporter for a syndicated teen magazine show called Scratch. Just as she was about to leave for Boston University, Channel One asked her to become one of its peripatetic on-air reporters. She attended USC while working full-time at Channel One's Hollywood studio. All her dates at USC were white, it's rumored. Soon after graduating she joined the panel of The View, ABC's popular daytime talkshow and began spending time with a Disney exec named Morgan Wandell. The fact that Disney is ABC's parent company led to resentment and innuendo. What really raised AA eyebrows was an Old Navy commercial showing Ling cavorting with a group of men and uttering the line "I like my man strong and good-looking". The beef? None of the five men are Asian.

Little wonder that many were skeptical of rumors that surfaced in early 2000 that Ling and Yune had become a couple. Some speculate that it's a sign that Asian men are ascendant. Others suspect it's just Ling's effort at rehabilitating her image with her Asian American viewership. Still others are just glad to see an Asian-Asian star couple at long last.

People are People:
The sad thing about that phrase is that it is so true and yet so unattainable. If people were just people we wouldnt have any of the race issues we have today. The fact is that unless you're White in this society (Western), you're looked upon negatively somewhat by many people, mostly White people. And in many cases, other non-white people also judge you differently. Lisa Ling was portrayed to be a sell-out to her own kind.
In America, "people are certainly not people." The society tells you who you are. The fact you have Black American, Asian Americans and Hispanic Americans clearly depict such.
I recall this movie,"3 Kings" where the Iraqi soldier commented on the US. "A country that makes its citizens hate themselves so much that they turn themselves into freaks (Michael Jackson)".. not a direct quote..but he did say something like that.
Of course strong people can overcome the pressures and so called standards of a White Society. Hopefully a beautiful asian girl with a strong asian male in the spotlight, says something about Asians in this country. My 2 cents..

A common theme in many of the postings reagarding Lisa and Rick is that they are both asian so it really shouldn't matter that much. I agree with you, but for a different reason. Yes Lisa and Rick are both Asian, but more importantly there are both human beings. To steal a depeche mode phrase, People are people. It is that simple really. White, black, Asian, Hispanic, pink, purple, blue, and even polka dot red. We are all people. Of course differences exist but if they did not, this world would be a boring place. You know what, some races may be more prepdisposed to mathematics, others to athletics, others to who know's what. But these facts are honestly besides the point, especially when relationships are concerned.
A relationship is just two people in love - ANY two people.

I'm a new fan of this website. I'm not a fan of all these inflammatory comments.
Is this AA star couple a sign that Asian men are ascendant? In Hollywood, perhaps. In the real world, we're all just people... each with our own unique differences, strengths, weaknesses... discovering who we are and what is meaningful.
That's precisely why I can't imagine how difficult it is to find a good relationship in the acting world. It's hard enough without the pressures of public opinion, your "image", etc. Congrats to anyone brave enough to look happiness.

I'm a white woman married to a chinese. I think everyone should be able to meet and date whom ever they want no matter what race. The issue isn't that they are Chinese or Corean. Rather the issue should be if the couple can last because they are high profiled celebs in California. A love comes very rare. If two people find each other and connect, that's a wonderful thing. If you limit yourself to one race, you are limiting your chances to find love and happiness. Unless we get rid of racism in this world, there will never be peace and harmony for everyone.

Hot Asian Couple:
I for one am really glad to see this. Lisa Ling, despite her apparent past of shunning her own race, is a pretty hot babe in my book. I'm glad she's finally dating an Asian dude.
You know now that there are some good-looking Asian males in the public eye (hopefully this will continue), the young asian females wont grow up with such low self-esteems that they must compensate by dating outside their own race. Hopefully that will instill more Asian pride. I think Asians are some of the most attractive people on this earth. I know we're known more for our brains, hard-working ethic, etc.. Such is a good thing. I must say, there have been people who have said that all my successes (few anyhow) had been attributed to my good looks. I'm a Chinese American male, whom most people I'd met had never attributed brains or work ethic too. Not that I'm not smart or people consider me lazy, it just appeared that way at times. But I do work on Wall Street and have been relatively successful, have a good degree etc.. But all my life, people have told me I'm on easy street cause of my looks, not anything else.
In any case, it's quite nice to see a hot Asian couple for once. We Asian males can be sexy as well. People, especially Asian women just need to open up their eyes and see through that negative veil that's been put shielding their eyes all their life. Lets blame that on the American White dominated media. But Lisa Ling, a hot Chinese American Babe, dating a hot Asian Stud.. says something.. I think anyhow.

Why the childish racist crap here? Simple, because people are JEALOUS!!! Simple as that. There are haters of every stripe and color, who can't stand to see people make something out of their lives instead of wallowing in misery and self hate!

Asian people here are so racist and prejudice of other Asians. Why? Chinese bashing Koreans and vice-versa. This is so silly and ridiculous! Aren't we Asians suppose to unite? It makes more sense to see Asian couples together than with Whites. Right? How are we going to have a strong Asian community in the future if we all are immature and blinded my self-racism?

They make a beautiful couple and everyone should not worry about whether one is good-looking enough for the other. P.S. You, "Anti-surgery", perhaps you've lost a man/woman to a Korean woman? Yes, I thought so.
Korean and I'll shout it from the mountaintop!

just discovered this website am glad to have found it. however, i see that u all like to digress from the subject at hand. my 2.5 cents worth: Lisa is a perfectly cute woman, and i, for one, am glad to see a celebrity APA couple like Lisa & Rick. as stated by others, they're both articulate, attractive, and informed representatives of the APA community.
why all this silly intra-racial bashing? we may be different ethnicities but are still all lumped under the "ASIAN" umbrella by the rest of American society. i see no reason to nitpick at each other's stereotypes. hey fellas, let's celebrate/recognize ALL our Asian sisters' beauty instead of ripping on each other. superficiality reflects ignorance and insecurity, and it's u morons who tarnish the image of APA men.

Hey!! I think that these two couples are cute together and they should have the right to be happy .. And! they're both well known and the ones who are jealous of Lisa Ling needs to get a life because they're the ones who's ugly, or else Rick Yune would have been after yo ass.
Ain't I Right?

Lisa Ling and Rick Yune look like a good couple -I think it is refreshing to see this finally. I hope it lasts, because not too many relationships survive in Hollywood for very long.
On a side not, how come the TV talk show "The View" produced by ABC has no Latinas on its show. What kind of crap is that? The show is based in LA and they can't find a Latina, in Los Angeles?
DISNEY/ABC CAN KISS LATINO/AS ASSES! They will get no support from the Latino community if they keep ignoring us and putting us down. Their loss. I am happy for Lisa Ling being on this show and watch the show (occasionally) only because she is on it.

It's really sad to see what people are posting. So what if Rick Yune and Lisa Ling are dating? More power to them. We shouldn't be bashing all Chinese or all Korean women as being ugly over a few ignorant comments made by very insecure people. There are pretty and ugly people in all ethnicities. The whole small eyes thing is really pathetic. Some Asians have small eyes so what? If they want to get surgery that's their decision, maybe negative comments like some of those made on this site helped make their decision to do so. We shouldn't be tearing down other Asians.

Personally, I think the relationship is just a bit too convenient and coincidental to be real. But, so what? Their relationship is their affair and is utterly irrelevent to anyone on this board. If it works out, great. If it doesn't, what else is new in Hollywood or anywhere else in the world?
Seeing the posts on this board is only further proof that ignorance and stupidity is really an unattractive combination in anyone (Korean, Chinese, etc). So called "Chosun Chick" is a blaring example in the extreme. However, you so called "proud" Chinese who fire back are quite frankly no better.
First, you assume the writer is even really Korean. This is the net, kids. Anyone can pretend to be anyone they want to be. I can pretend to be some white teen chick with double D breasts and nobody would know any better. For all anyone knows, "Chosun Chick" could be nothing more than some emasculated, Aryan Nations wannabe looking to create ill will within the VERY divided AA community.
Second, Korean women are hardly the only asian women who get plastic surgery on their eyes, faces whatever. When was the last time you saw any Asian movie star or singer-idol, especially a woman, who didn't get plastic surgery of some kind? They exist but there doesn't seem to be many out there. Plenty of other non-Korean Asian women go under the shallow knife as well so stop acting as if only Korean women do plastic surgery in large numbers.
Third, even if "Chosun Chick" is some very digruntled Korean wench, so what? Yelling your own ethnic slurs isn't proving your point, you're only proving her's so stop acting like you're her easily manipulated stooge. If you want to get revenge and piss her off, be friends with as many people, Korean and non-Korean, as you can. Nothing pisses off a pig-dog like "Chosun Chick" more than when her hateful tactics blow up in her face.
Anyone who judges a person by the group is pea-brained moron. You need to evaulate individuals, one-at-a-time. So whether you are Korean or Chinese, if you are thowing slurs, just bloody hell grow up. If you can't do that, just blow your brains out and make the world a cleaner, nicer place.
