LISA LING & RICK YUNE
(Updated Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 06:06:53 PM)

he's the most watched Asian woman on American TV. He's the year's hottest Asian American movie hunk. She's 26. He's 29. She's 5-5. He's 6-1. She's Chinese. He's Corean. Both are unquestionably American. She's daringly bubbly. He's recklessly intense. What makes them special to many AA minds is that they defied the odds and the unwritten laws of the American media to become the lone bona fide Asian American star couple.
Rick Yune was barely one wen his family left his native Seoul, Corea for Silver Springs, Maryland. His education has been enviably ivy-covered -- private schools topped off by a Wharton MBA. Then came a stint as a Wall Street stock trader and modeling for Versace and Polo. He made a memorable film debut in December 1999 as a young Japanese American husband accused of murder in Snow Falling on Cedars. Yune's character walks and gets the girl. A breathless Newsweek profile didn't hurt his career. His intense and classic Asian features add sizzle to The Fast and the Furious (2001) and will undoubtedly do the same for The Fence (2001).
Lisa Ling is a Sacramento native who got her start in TV at the age of 15 as a reporter for a syndicated teen magazine show called Scratch. Just as she was about to leave for Boston University, Channel One asked her to become one of its peripatetic on-air reporters. She attended USC while working full-time at Channel One's Hollywood studio. All her dates at USC were white, it's rumored. Soon after graduating she joined the panel of The View, ABC's popular daytime talkshow and began spending time with a Disney exec named Morgan Wandell. The fact that Disney is ABC's parent company led to resentment and innuendo. What really raised AA eyebrows was an Old Navy commercial showing Ling cavorting with a group of men and uttering the line "I like my man strong and good-looking". The beef? None of the five men are Asian.
Little wonder that many were skeptical of rumors that surfaced in early 2000 that Ling and Yune had become a couple. Some speculate that it's a sign that Asian men are ascendant. Others suspect it's just Ling's effort at rehabilitating her image with her Asian American viewership. Still others are just glad to see an Asian-Asian star couple at long last.

WHAT YOU SAY

Umm.. You guys do know that the term "oriental" is a social construction and it has a negative connotation right? So stop USING IT! It is a term created in the early 19th-20th century and it is very negative.

Well, i just wanted to let you guys know that all of you guys should read more. For the most of you, your word choices are incorrect because you are not used to using words in different tenses.

As for Rick Yune and Lisa Ling, that's great that they are going out. My cousin met Lisa and Rick at a news convention, and I too shall meet that foxy lady one day and be more popular than Mr. Yune... ^_^ (He is my role model by the way)

Actually I think the most watched Asian women on American TV's are Kobe Tai and Asia Carrera haha. If its true Lisa Ling only dated white guys then maybe she decided to "settle" for an Asian guy with the most extraordinary credentials that just barely makes up for his not being white. In anycase it will be cool to see a high profile Asian american couple in the media. I think Kristy Yamaguchi was dating Michael chang for a while but dumped him and recently married a white guy. Connie Chung, lucy liu, and tia carrera are in the same boat. Too bad Lisa ling looks like an eggplant though.

>> All her dates at USC were white, it's rumored. <<

Why is it that the people supposedly supporting asians and asian-american culture turn out to be worse racists than any of the rabid flannel wearing sepratist gun nuts in the northwest.

Saying its rumored is akin to saying, Im making this up. She should date whoever she finds attractive, whoever she thinks shes compatable with. I seriously doubt she needs to rehabilitate her image with Asian-American veiwership. Its only racist asian men who are upset.

To Lauren: hey bitch, you stay where you belong in damp cold england. You don't no the situation in north america and it is entirely different from europe, so shut that f--k up. ASnother word from u and i'll need to cover your mouth with a tampax. As for interracial dating, there is nothing wrong with it but the way the american media portray asian men is so damn f--king obvious, so shut your foul mouth.

We're not "orientals" first of all.. The word oriental seems to remind me of goods like rugs, pottery, etc.
I wish Rick and Lisa good luck!

I think that looks do matter this days in society, and apperence was always so emphasized. But the truth is Rick is soooo dame hot and finnnne! and not to mention a super smart guy. Lisa Ling is impressive and well educated, but they just don't look good together. And no, I am no playerhaten, it's just that we all know she's just not good looking and he can do so much better...

Why does it matter that Asians must date Asians to be true to their heritage? I date Asians, whites, blacks, etc because the person appeals to me, not because I am a white wash or whatever people choose to call me. To make a big deal out of Rick Yune dating Lisa Ling just because they are both Asians is just narrow-minded bigotry and I would think that bigotry is something us Asians all know about and would like to avoid. So now who is the kettle calling the pot black?

I think everyone should just get off the subject of physical beauty. Both Lisa and Rick are beautiful Asian Americans! They have both accomplished many things in there lives. We should commend and support them on their success and be happy for their relationship.

Rick and Lisa can't have cute kids because LIsa is TOO damn ugly !!!!
She is also sooo annoying on the "View"

EEEWWWW LISA    Thursday, August 09, 2001 at 18:50:32 (PDT)
any celebreity couple of any race doesn't last forever! that's a guarantee!

Hey, DC, is there a reason why you should use the word 'damn'? Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Afterall Lisa is well known for dating non asians in the past. It does not matter why these two are attracted to each other. Most people think Rick is too good looking for Lisa, well she is ugly. But that does not matter, cause she may have the personality to overpower her looks. Good on you Rick. Its good to see a good looking Hollywood star dating a normal looking girl!

Hey, DC, why don't you chill out. So you think Asian Americans have a harder time dating??? Everyone has that problem. No matter if you are from the UK, USA, Europe, or Asia. So your no exception.

I'm happy that Rick, and Lisa are dating. But after reading AA perspective views of dating non-Orientals. I agree with Lauren, I just think that alot of you guys are putting your own race down. Its does not matter about the pressures in Hollywood. At the end of the day, its love & attraction that put two together. Its probably guys like you and the press who are likey to split them.
Rebecca    Sunday, August 05, 2001 at 15:15:05 (PDT)
Damn Lauren, chill out. As for Rick and Lisa, I wish them the best. In Hollywood, there is a lot of pressure to stay single, and date around...outside your race It's part of the whole networking thang. This is especially true for Asian Americans. It seems Rick and Lisa don't care about that aspect and that's cool.

we all know lisa is not even close to a perfect 10, but she sure as hell has something good enough to get a fine guy like rick. As long as they are happy and love each other who cares. I hope they last awhile, it's nice to see them so in love.

From their appearance on the View, they look like very much in love. I wish them luck too.

hey, what is wrong with you American born orientals?????? What is the big deal about dating an Oriental?!? I was born in the UK, and I'm Chinese, but cannot see the big deal about dating a non-Oriental or Oriental. I think you should all grow up, and face reality! No matter what your backgrounds are, we are all human, and individuals. I'm proud being Chinese, and even though I was born outside Asia, and lived through a European lifestyle. I still respect my background, culture, and have no hard feelings about who I date.
Lauren    Monday, July 23, 2001 at 01:31:36 (PDT)
Rick can do better (at least physically speaking), but at least they make a great AA power couple.

For the most part, we all want to feel a sense of belonging and define our identity in this so called "America". How do you identify yourself? Do you combine the two cultures to form your own identity or go extreme with one or the other? Whatever is your choice, I think more and more we are identifying ourselves with social and economic attributes. This is how we become prejudiced towards our own kind. The American social classification is being stratisfied by economics and socialization. Instead of admiring and praising one another of living and acheiving the American dream, we bash one another and compete against each other. Why can't we use Rick Yung's and Linda Ling's unification as an example and reflection of our wonderful human Asian characteristics? If we want to identify ourselves and refine ourselves, let's be a bit more positive
and embrace success with humbleness.

i'm glad for both of them. Good girl like Lisa should date Asian men. In fact most good girls want to date asian men. Bad girls go with white men only.

I'm thankful that the majority of voices on this issue are all in favour of Rick and Lisa being a couple. I think they make a great couple and best of luck to them.
