LISA LING & RICK YUNE
(Updated Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 06:06:52 PM)

he's the most watched Asian woman on American TV. He's the year's hottest Asian American movie hunk. She's 26. He's 29. She's 5-5. He's 6-1. She's Chinese. He's Corean. Both are unquestionably American. She's daringly bubbly. He's recklessly intense. What makes them special to many AA minds is that they defied the odds and the unwritten laws of the American media to become the lone bona fide Asian American star couple.
Rick Yune was barely one when his family left his native Seoul, Corea for Silver Springs, Maryland. His education has been enviably ivy-covered -- private schools topped off by a Wharton MBA. Then came a stint as a Wall Street stock trader and modeling for Versace and Polo. He made a memorable film debut in December 1999 as a young Japanese American husband accused of murder in Snow Falling on Cedars. Yune's character walks and gets the girl. A breathless Newsweek profile didn't hurt his career. His intense and classic Asian features add sizzle to The Fast and the Furious (2001) and will undoubtedly do the same for The Fence (2001).
Lisa Ling is a Sacramento native who got her start in TV at the age of 15 as a reporter for a syndicated teen magazine show called Scratch. Just as she was about to leave for Boston University, Channel One asked her to become one of its peripatetic on-air reporters. She attended USC while working full-time at Channel One's Hollywood studio. All her dates at USC were white, it's rumored. Soon after graduating she joined the panel of The View, ABC's popular daytime talkshow and began spending time with a Disney exec named Morgan Wandell. The fact that Disney is ABC's parent company led to resentment and innuendo. What really raised AA eyebrows was an Old Navy commercial showing Ling cavorting with a group of men and uttering the line "I like my men strong and good-looking". The beef? None of the five men are Asian.
Little wonder that many were skeptical of rumors that surfaced in early 2000 that Ling and Yune had become a couple. Some speculate that it's a sign that Asian men are ascendant. Others suspect it's just Ling's effort at rehabilitating her image with her Asian American viewership. Still others are just glad to see an Asian-Asian star couple at long last.

WHAT YOU SAY

You are with who you are with. period. I've actually met lisa ling in person and she was very nice and patient with me. The duality needed for the public and private person is in all individuals. We all need to be better stewards of our heritage and lives, but to make excuses for being born in a particular place and raised a certain way, doesn't justify hurtful words. So unless that person that seems so very fake has done so to you, then that is the way to take it. I think lisa and yune understand the magnitude of their union, and whether it lasts for a few moons or until their both dust, it is something that needs to be at least appreciated in this place.

I think I am in love with Lisa Ling. I am white, but what difference does that make? Why can't we keep race out of this? After all, only racists care about somebody's skin colour or hair texture. I cannot watch her on TV without getting all hot and flustered! She is soo... hot (I hope my girl friend doesn't see this)!

You Korean girls are unbelievable. You perpetuate the notion that Asian groups can get along with each other. I can't believe what I read about Lisa and Rick. They are both beautiful and talented and are probably much more successful than anyone who has written here.

Rick Yune is hardly even good looking. Give Lisa Ling a break. She's much more famous than he is. He's eating off of her fame. Funny how people keep on saying how Rick Yune will be the next great star. None of my Asian friends even know who he is.

I never heard about The View until a friend of mine joined their roster of employees. Let's say as an Ivy League college student the show never sparked my interest.

I am a Korean American girl and I don't think Asian guys are particularly good-looking. I think Rick Yune is the only exception thus far.

I wish he would date a Korean girl because I have a bit of Korean pride. Yet, I really don't care who the heck he ends up marrying.

As many have said before me: race doesn't matter. Biologically, we are 99.8% the same. If I were taking a DNA testing of a random individual, I would have less than a 20% chance of guessing their ethnicity.

Can't beat empirical evidence.

bobaloo,

First off Lisa Ling being the smartest on the View is not that impressive considering the caliber of hosts. Second that actor she's dating has an MBA from Wharton. Whats her education? Some journalism degree from a California state school? I don't even know..but its couldn't be as impressize as a Wharton MBA.

How will Rick Yune's career really be catapulted by being with a fine looking white girl? It doesn't make sense??

I am in love with Lisa Ling. She is definitely the smarted one on the View. Why is she dating an actor?

"I just think Lisa Ling is not very likeable. She is so fake and transparent. In order to succeed, she has sold her soul and became whitewashed. If Rick is going to be with an Asian woman, then it should be someone like Joan Chen. Joan is solid when it comes to being a strong Asian woman who is happy with her Asian identity. Rick deserves better."

I agree with JEFF'S quote. She does not seem to have the Chinese culture. Ask her to live in China for one year in the village without all the high end of things. Can she handle it? Maybe or mabey not. Even though if she can handle living there for a year and experience the real Chinese culture, Lisa knows at after a year, she will come back to live in her own little whitewashed world and high ends of things. Anybody agree? Does she really present the Asian or the Asian that is whitewashed to be in the crowd? In order for Lisa Ling to succeed in her high end of things, she has to live up and not act, but train herself to be whitewash, which she did a very good job. I remember reading an section about Lisa Ling getting along with Barbara Walter from 20/20 and the View. Of course she "HAS" to get along with her, she has to kiss up. Lisa didn't even mention about the other staff that she worked with. Even though there are a lot of negative things about Lisa Ling, there are some positive things about her. Lisa has worked her way up to be where she is at. About the Old Navy commerical, the models maybe white, but it was not her choice to pick them or it's her idea. She was offer a job to be in a commerical and Old Navy hired her. That's typical. Just like if Old navy hired a African-American.

This is to Lisa Ling: Lisa you are doing a great job, but remember the old saying "Be yourself, that is the meaning of you."
