ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES
Kristin Kreuk: Next Asian American Beauty?
t isn't a question of droolworthiness. Her looks are dazzling enough to have locked up a lead role in each of her first three auditions, including the title role in an upcoming TV movie. It's more a question of whether most of us would identify hazel-eyed Smallville heartthrob Lana Lang as a fellow Asian.

Kristin Laura Kreuk was born to a Chinese mother and a Dutch father on December 30, 1982. She grew up in Vancouver, Canada. Kreuk, 5-4, had decided to go to college to study forensic pathology until, in her senior year, her drama teacher suggested she go to an audition for a new Fox Family series called Edgement. She was promptly plucked out of the open audition to play a Chinese Canadian high scool student named Laurel Yeung. Even as she won fans in the role, she landed the Lana Lang role for WB's dramatization of Superboy's life as Clark Kent, then the role of Snow White in the ABC TV movie set for release in 2002. Kreuk's star-quality was obvious to all who tuned in for Smallville's premiere last October. Some even proclaimed her the show's main attraction.

But many Asian American viewers didn't even suspect Kreuk's Asian ancestry. Even those who learned of her mother's nationality questioned whether she can be claimed by Asian Americans. Without an Asian surname or obvious Asian facial features, they argue, Kreuk's success would do nothing for the image of Asians in the American media. Others might argue that most African American stars are, in fact, only fractionally of African descent.

Should we claim Kristin Kreuk and other hapas like her as Asian American celebrities? Or should that designation be reserved for those with a more obviously Asian identity?

You guys are claiming so much and don't put your brains to think. She looks birracial. Not all whites are pretty. Not all Asians are ugly. Relax. If we do not have presence in the media it is because we do not support our own people. Stop crying and lets do something. Lets have our own TV station, our own team, our own movie company our own everything!!!!
Asians forever

I think its a shame that we have to debate the worthiness of Kristin's Asian ancestry. So what if her features aren't decidely asian, guess what? There will be more people like Kristin, who are of mixed ancestry. They do not need to be made second class citizens just because they are.
Here is something to think about as well. None of us should believe that we are Asians because of the way we look, although it may be the most defining trait. There are other traits and practices that blend together to suggest an identity.
I know many Asians who are Asians only in their physical features. They don't speak their mother tongue. They don't eat with chopsticks. They rarely practice "Asian" traditions. They are a product of several generations in a foreign land and an unreinforced Asian practices. Are these individuals any less Asian?

Kristin's NewFan,
I couldnt agree with you more! A blend of ethnicities IS a beautiful thing. And despite what some people on this forum tend to think, it's not a crime that these people of mixed ethnicities are successful in Hollywood. They are, after all, beautiful.
Give me a friggin break

IT"S ME AGAIN BRAGALASH *lashes her head*
Chinese people are sooo darn white you know... just that american asian people who have 2 generations + are darker cuz they were peasants escaping china. A girl should not be tanned! Only men should. Big lips are for caucasians! Classy Chinese females need not big lips! Us chinese frown upon you!
Imagine you just stepped in a beauty parlor in Shanghai. "Uh... look at the girl who just walked in... *kristin*"
Here's a recipe for the perfect chinese girl!!
White white skin! (no red, no yellow, no brown) Only Chinese girls can achieve skin like that.
5'5- 5'11!!
33C-22-33 for thin stature!
Refreshing eyes! Double eyelid to resemble an ancient phoenix, on lower eyelids, it should lay non protrudent!
Completely flat eyes, cause no tiring shadows!
Mouth should be only as wide as an eye!
Big mouth is for men!
Long faces with sharp chins and round top! Graceful necks! Long legs and pretty feet elegance! This is achieved by only true beauties, e.g. cecilia cheung .
Ms.Kwan!!!

Jay... teaching the blind,
YOU ARE SO OFFENSIVE TO ASIANS!
well maybe to chinese, korean and japanese from asia.
Chinese people have such tiny lips man... i hope u dont mean full as in big... better not!!!
She is also so tanned... and a pretty chinese girl is supposed to be as white as the ancient beauties of the imperial court! Most japanese girls now are whiter than caucasian people.
Chinese girl not petite! THey are maybe sticklike, but very long long sticks... like super long. Like 5'9.
Caucasians have the biggest mouths in the world next to africans. Chinese women in China always brag about their small lips compared to caucasian women! Only big mouths are for men!
Now I should not pummel you for your american forms of beauty, but over here in china, you just insulted us!

Jay:
I take issue with your statement: "9) do you see White people with nice full lips, like hers? I don't think so!
Unless they're half Mexican!!!"
I am a Caucasian man of Swedish and Scots ancestry who's always been complemented by women of all ethnicities because I have nice full lips. And no, I didn't get them via plastic surgery.
Some White folks have full lips, some have bird lips. It varies from person to person, so please lay off.
