ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES
Kristin Kreuk: Next Asian American Beauty?
t isn't a question of droolworthiness. Her looks are dazzling enough to have locked up a lead role in each of her first three auditions, including the title role in an upcoming TV movie. It's more a question of whether most of us would identify hazel-eyed Smallville heartthrob Lana Lang as a fellow Asian.

Kristin Laura Kreuk was born to a Chinese mother and a Dutch father on December 30, 1982. She grew up in Vancouver, Canada. Kreuk, 5-4, had decided to go to college to study forensic pathology until, in her senior year, her drama teacher suggested she go to an audition for a new Fox Family series called Edgement. She was promptly plucked out of the open audition to play a Chinese Canadian high scool student named Laurel Yeung. Even as she won fans in the role, she landed the Lana Lang role for WB's dramatization of Superboy's life as Clark Kent, then the role of Snow White in the ABC TV movie set for release in 2002. Kreuk's star-quality was obvious to all who tuned in for Smallville's premiere last October. Some even proclaimed her the show's main attraction.

But many Asian American viewers didn't even suspect Kreuk's Asian ancestry. Even those who learned of her mother's nationality questioned whether she can be claimed by Asian Americans. Without an Asian surname or obvious Asian facial features, they argue, Kreuk's success would do nothing for the image of Asians in the American media. Others might argue that most African American stars are, in fact, only fractionally of African descent.

Should we claim Kristin Kreuk and other hapas like her as Asian American celebrities? Or should that designation be reserved for those with a more obviously Asian identity?

TO the entertainment underworld:
"You obviously don't work in the entertainment industry." Um what does that have to do with anything i said? ur stereotyping a people. u specifically said all Jews have a racism problem, not just the ones who work in the entertainment industry. so what does this have to do with the entertainment industry huh? do know all the jews in the whole WORLD? why don't u respond to my accusations instead of trying to weasel out of it with some inane unconnected comment? i wonder why u don't defend urself. hmmmmm..maybe it's because u have no basis for what u say. working in the entertainment industry doesn't give u the right to b racist, and it doesn't make u all-knowing either. like i said before, if ur going to b racist, ADMIT IT already.

It would be nice if Kristen Kreuk would represent us asians, but the fact is Kristen already admitted in dozens of interviews that she doesn't want to be under the "famous asian actors/actresses" category. Thats fine, but to tell you the truth, the asians in the U.S are giving her the recognition and popularity that shes gaining. For her to say she doesn't want to be apart or be considered an asian is offensive since asians are the majority of her fans. Another disgrace is that she doesn't even know how to speak mandarin or even bothered to take interest in the language. She has totally abandoned her chinese roots. She can't deny her chinese heritage because it is definitely in her blood, but she chooses to. If Kristen Kreuk doesn't want to take part in any of her asian roots...thats fine with me. It's not like anyone is begging her to step up and represent the asians when she seems to bash on us in certain interviews. I'm still a big fan of Kristen Kruek as an actress, but after reading how she apparently perfer not to be asian...I'm starting to think otherwise. I'm not saying to stop being a fan of hers. I'm simply saying that she doesn't have to be so ungrateful to the asian community who supported her and gotten her this far in the industry.

I think that Kristen Kreuk is gorgeous and though she may not appear like she has an obvious asian identity, being an asian myself, I can tell that she definitely has some asian blood in her. I think that her mixture is awesome and that she should definitely be considered an Asian American celebrity because clearly, that is what she is. She has talent and beauty. I would die for her beauty. I think she is extremely attractive and a fabulous actress.

Lots of racist viewers don't like Kristin once they find out she's part Asian. Is she saying she's not representing anybody as a way to achieve acceptance from white viewers? Her opportunities would dwindle if producers and corporations found that she's not marketable to the majority of the population (whites) in North America.
Whether she identifies with her Asian roots or not, viewers and spectators see her as part Asian. I agree it shouldn't matter what race she is and that her beauty and talent should overcome all. But the sad truth is that race is a big thing and many, many people in North America don't like us.
disappointed but hopeful
