JET LI vs JACKIE CHAN: DUELING IMAGES
(Updated
Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 05:56:20 PM)
n late July 2001 the world's two top martial arts stars announced a deal to co-produce and co-star in an action flick to be filmed in late 2002 for a 2003 release. The question naturally arises: what kind of movie could do justice to two such divergent types? Jackie Chan is a highly acrobatic clown who has built his following on a self-effacing counry bumpkin image. Jet Li is a deadly serious warrior who finds it easier to crack a man's neck than a smile.

Now that both global megastars are releasing big-budget Hollywood films at a breakneck pace for seven-figure salaries, they are the most visible Asians in the American filmgoing consciousness. Whether we Asian Americans like it or not, our image is shaped more by the screen exploits and antics of these two broken-English speaking foreigners than by any dozen Asian American actors. In the filmgoing psyche the sober, chaste and deadly-efficient Chinese cop in Kiss of the Dragon is pitted against the nimble goofball in Rush Hour 2.

Which Hong Kong star is better for the image of Asian Americans?

WHAT YOU SAY

Evan Djirlic,
Why do people think martial art performance equates fighting ability. Both Jacky Chan and Jet Li have stated in multiple interviews that movie martial arts would never work in real life. You would die from the mere physical excertion if those scenes were real, let alone all the brutal hits that they are taking.
If performance martial arts and real martial arts were that similar. Movies would be full of titles holders, and gold medalist. And sport sparring events would have Van Damn, Jet Li, Jacky Chan in them. But they don't because they are different. One is make believe (which looks beautiful), and one is real (which looks ugly).

Well i think there is also a matter of who wants to be seen the most Jet li is not as well known (unfortunatley) and Chan has made a huge inpression in hollywood movies. My opinion on who is beta after watching both and ALL there movies i feel Jet li could be knocked down by a mere boxer he has to progress from stylish Kung fu to more power in boxing or something where jackie just flops his hole body in2 action. There is alot to be thought about....

basically.. jacky chan is a better actor, better martial artist, better driver, better swimmer, better everything... u people just say that jet li will win coz of how serious he is when he fights... just because jacky's film has comedies in it doesnt mean that he cant fight seriously.
jacky is way older than li so the speed maybe a plus for li and also the power. but remember the years of experience that jacky has and all those old tricks. one on one.. jacky chan will be the winner above all. a true person. in every sense of the word.
peace out!

Neither of them are better for the image of Asian Americans. They are good for the image of Asians from Asia. So far very few Asian Americans have been good images for AA's. Look at Lisa Ling doing those stupid Old Navy commercials running around w/ white and black boys while Asian men are no where to be found. Watch Lucy Liu on Ally McBeal portraying the stereotypical Dragon Lady role in a overly sexual and nonrealistic way that does nothing for Asian women but belittle them for white boys. Ming Na Wen once defended black boys on Sinbad's talkshow saying "what's wrong w/black guys?" since her co-star Snipes is black. Clearly she went overboard and got nosy where she needn't be.

Without a doubt Jet Li..
Jackie Chan, was in Toronto to help raise money for the sick kids hospital and the yee hong geriatric centre. I was part of the show helping out and during the show, he showed exactly how he did all his stunts, all his stunt doubles, effects, and camera angles. He is more stuntman than martial artist. Jet li has training from Shaolin, and even though i don' tknow where Jackie chan got his martial arts training, I can tell you, it's not shaolin. And personally, I would rather be seen as being cool with an attitude, than a fool.

...oh yeah did you know Jackie Chan does not perform all his own stunts...he actually has a double that fills in for him once in a while because he has weak legs that break easy...so on major jumps he will sometimes ask for a double

Some one posted that Bruce Lee could kick both their butts in a fight...well thats probably true since both has said at least once in interviews that bruce lee was far greater in speed, power, and technical skill in all areas...but that was not the question...personally jackie chan did learn a little bit from Bruce Lee himself...so its not like jackie chan doesn't know how to defend himself...and Jet Li has been in fights from what I have read about him...so they are both very good martial arts...Jet li doesn't use advanced technology in all his movies...and if you saw some of them you would realize that he is really good...both men have broken bones...I thik both have some great aspects...Jackie Chan has the humorous side and Jet has the serious side...Bruce Lee actually had both humor and seriousness in his movies (They were censored in the U.S., but are in the DVD versions I think)and since both are in their 40's (Jet Li is around 41) they both are showing extreme skill for their age...besides the person considered the fastests and one of the best martial artists in the world..and has been in many movies is a female...so I think you really can't compare the two they may have dofferent personality but that is what makes them interesting...conflicting personalities make great movies!
