JET LI vs JACKIE CHAN: DUELING IMAGES
(Updated
Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 05:56:19 PM)
n late July 2001 the world's two top martial arts stars announced a deal to co-produce and co-star in an action flick to be filmed in late 2002 for a 2003 release. The question naturally arises: what kind of movie could do justice to two such divergent types? Jackie Chan is a highly acrobatic clown who has built his following on a self-effacing counry bumpkin image. Jet Li is a deadly serious warrior who finds it easier to crack a man's neck than a smile.

Now that both global megastars are releasing big-budget Hollywood films at a breakneck pace for seven-figure salaries, they are the most visible Asians in the American filmgoing consciousness. Whether we Asian Americans like it or not, our image is shaped more by the screen exploits and antics of these two broken-English speaking foreigners than by any dozen Asian American actors. In the filmgoing psyche the sober, chaste and deadly-efficient Chinese cop in Kiss of the Dragon is pitted against the nimble goofball in Rush Hour 2.

Which Hong Kong star is better for the image of Asian Americans?

Who would win in a fight: Jackie Chan or Jet Li?
The answer is simple: With Jet Li flying around with his wires and cables and computer effects, of course Jet Li would emerge as the winner.

Jet Li is the Chinease martial art champion a record 5 times performed at the white house at 11 years old, that says it all. Jackie Chan is good and great to watch but Jet is clearly in another class, what really bores me is people going on about Bruce Lee, his movies were dull and he was over hyped, how many tornaments did he win, the fact is that he pioneered the martial arts movies and people seem to think that the 1st is the best, if he was around now he would be compared to Steven Segal.

Of course, jet is viewed as the serious guy but he can be funny too (the legend of fong sai-yuk, hitman) as jackie can be serious (crime story, heart of dragon), but of course most of the time, jet is the serious and jackie is the funny. I hope the movie will be as funny as it is serious featuring the best of their talents (at least what they can do at their age; no one expects a 10-minute final fight scene ala fist of legend or drunken master 2)
I just think it will be the dream of many hong kong movies fans come true. It will be a movie that everyone will remember as it features the 2 greatest asian martial arts since bruce lee.

Jet Li and Jackie Chan have very different styles and how they approach doing their films. I like both acting, I feel that Jet Li is more exiting to watch with his speed and form, and Jakie Chan's films are more comical, and are fun to watch. I think that both stars are very good image for asian americans, everyone realizes that english is their second language, and people should respect the fact that it has to be hard to do a movie for another country in their language, and I think they pull it off pretty good. Being an asian american myself, it's awsome the respect that americans get to see asian culture in these films, and hopefully we will see more asian americans in starring roles, and not just in action films.

Better for the image...hmmmm.
Well, first, I just have to say...HEY! Jet Li is too funny! More so in his earlier stuff...The Legend is funny funny! And Jet's English is shaping up pretty nicely, too. But anyway... ;-)
I have to admit, though, that Jet Li is less of a clown and more "competent" in the roles he picks in movies that made it in America. I think, though, that most Americans have more affection for Jackie Chan, and they love him for doing his own stunts (which Jet Li does too, but he doesn't usually jump onto trains from helicopters, etc.). They're good friends, and they're both really nice in real life as far as I've ever heard or seen. And they're both less scary and detached than Bruce Lee, no matter how cool he was. And they both demonstrate that Asian guys tend to age way better than white guys.
On the down side, neither of them ever kiss girls in their films, with one or two tiny exceptions. I don't know if it's being raised in China or maybe Hong Kong standard policy that's ingrained in them now, but it doesn't really help the whole "asexual Asian guy" stereotype. "Chaste" is right!! Oh well.

Jet Li never trained in shaolin. He trained in the art of wushu. Jackie trained in a chinese opera school. Both there trainings were hard as hell. Jackies movies dont have all that flying stuff in it like jet's but a lot of things jackie does with the ladders and such wont happen in real life either. You cant really decide whose better.
