JET LI vs JACKIE CHAN: DUELING IMAGES
(Updated Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 05:56:18 PM)

n late July 2001 the world's two top martial arts stars announced a deal to co-produce and co-star in an action flick to be filmed in late 2002 for a 2003 release. The question naturally arises: what kind of movie could do justice to two such divergent types? Jackie Chan is a highly acrobatic clown who has built his following on a self-effacing counry bumpkin image. Jet Li is a deadly serious warrior who finds it easier to crack a man's neck than a smile.
Now that both global megastars are releasing big-budget Hollywood films at a breakneck pace for seven-figure salaries, they are the most visible Asians in the American filmgoing consciousness. Whether we Asian Americans like it or not, our image is shaped more by the screen exploits and antics of these two broken-English speaking foreigners than by any dozen Asian American actors. In the filmgoing psyche the sober, chaste and deadly-efficient Chinese cop in Kiss of the Dragon is pitted against the nimble goofball in Rush Hour 2.
Which Hong Kong star is better for the image of Asian Americans?

WHAT YOU SAY

In Comic relief it is definetly Jackie Chan with his hilarious acrobatic and outrageous movements as well as his lack of vocabulary. But for the Fighting and action it must be Jet Li because of his techniques that he uses.
The fight between them both and who would win? in my opinion it will definetly be Jet Li because he's a real martial artist whilst Jackie Chan isn't although he does know martial arts, but no where near up to the standards of Jet Li.
Both 2 actors are only linked by the action genre and nothing else. Jackie Chan is a comedy entertainer whilst Jet Li is an action entertainer. Let's be realistic here would you really jump the gaps in a ladder during a fight? i don't think so. this is Jackie's way of entertainment which does imrpess the audience but does not imrpess martial artists around the world. especially follwers of Bruce Lee who say Jackie Chan's martial arts is like an beginer- amatuer level.
Jet Li entertains the crowd with asian martial arts movements with plenty graceful flowing movements and then sudden swift attacks. E.g. The hose pipe in romeo must die. Jet Li's fighting skills are known very well by most ppl, especially for his speed. Probably why they chose him for Once Upon a Tim in China because of his speed which relates to Wong Fei Hung's NoShadow Kick, which basically is a really fast kick with a abnormal shadow?.
Overall i think it depends upon the asian americans themselves on what they want to be known as. whether cool and hard type like Jet with a unique figure, or a clown like Jackie Chan.
In my opinion i believe it is Jet Li because he represents an image of the chinese being tough and not weak which most of the west picture asians to be.

I propose a question not a comment... is it fair? Is it fair that one who would risk life and limb to please the audience, nourish a career that has spanned over 3 decades, always being in a position to be compared with the very top but temporary competition be comparable to anyone in the field, except with the definite exception of one Bruce Lee? The answer of course is no! Its not even reasonable, only fun as its excuse. Jackie Chan is a pheneomenon and those are incomparable.

Okay here we go. It is a shame to have Jet in the sentance as Van Damn sorry but true. Jet and Jackie may have in the works to star in a movie together which will be awsome. Why do ppl keep bring up Bruce Lee? Leave him alone it doesn't concern him. May he rest in peace. Yes Bruce was an awsome fighter but come on we have two new stars here ppl. As far as Jet not being a good fighter well um.....wrong he is just as good as Jackie. Jackie is not faster then Jet either. The two are very close friends and to just compare them is ridiculous in the first place. One is not better then the other. Both have unique qualities to make them a better image for Asians Americans. So stop ridiculing one or the other and just go on. For those that like Jackie try checking out Jet's Hong Kong movies and you will see Jet in a different light trust me. Well that's about it for now but count on it that I will return to see your replys!

Jackie Chan is better. He appears to be not as moralistic as Jet Li (the monk and scholar). At least in the movies. J.C. is also more exotic. Look at his strange "Fighting styles" like "emotional hsing yi" , "snake fist" or "dragon fist".

Jackie is the veteran so to speak, and Jet is the new rookie as far as Hollywood goes. I like them both. They both serve their purposes in the movie industry.
I think it is unfair to compare the two when it's obvious they have different paths they take as far as choosing their roles. They also have different fighting styles too and it would be doing the both of them an injustice to say that one is better than the other.
I enjoy seeing them both on the big screen.....and no matter what they are both number one in my book.
