JET LI vs JACKIE CHAN: DUELING IMAGES
(Updated Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 05:56:14 PM)

n late July 2001 the world's two top martial arts stars announced a deal to co-produce and co-star in an action flick to be filmed in late 2002 for a 2003 release. The question naturally arises: what kind of movie could do justice to two such divergent types? Jackie Chan is a highly acrobatic clown who has built his following on a self-effacing counry bumpkin image. Jet Li is a deadly serious warrior who finds it easier to crack a man's neck than a smile.
Now that both global megastars are releasing big-budget Hollywood films at a breakneck pace for seven-figure salaries, they are the most visible Asians in the American filmgoing consciousness. Whether we Asian Americans like it or not, our image is shaped more by the screen exploits and antics of these two broken-English speaking foreigners than by any dozen Asian American actors. In the filmgoing psyche the sober, chaste and deadly-efficient Chinese cop in Kiss of the Dragon is pitted against the nimble goofball in Rush Hour 2.

Which Hong Kong star is better for the image of Asian Americans?

Hi guys!

My name is Julius Roden and I like Jacky Chan better than Jet Li because he's doing his own stunt. But I am also happy for the success of Jet Li penetrating the audience of hollywood. Congratulations guys!
Anyway, I think that Lucy Liu and Zang Zi Yi as well as Michelle Yeoh are doing their own thing.
I saw the pictures of Lucy Liu with Antonio Banderas in the movie "BALLISTICS". I think that the movie will be a hit.

XOXOXOXOXO

It cracks me up how people will compare apples with oranges, debating until the cows come home over who would kick whose ass. Uh, did it ever occur to any of you that both Jet Li and Jackie Chan are actors first, and martial artists second. Neither one is the baddest of the bad, since you'll never know who is the baddest mofu on earth, unless you've seen every martials arts tournament, every ultimate fighting match, every street brawl and can convince us unequivocally that there is one guy who could kick everyone else's ass on earth. But i seriously doubt that this person, if he/she exists, is an actor in Hollywood or Hong Kong.

Anyway, you can't really compare Jet Li and Jackie Chan because they have different acting styles. Jet Li tries to take himself seriously, acting like da killa (as only Bruce Lee could be) whereas Jackie is into the physical comedy aspect of martial arts. Both are performance artists but they approach their craft differently and prepare for their roles as such.

I'm sure if Jackie Chan, Jet Li or anyone else like Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, etc. (and Bruce Lee, if he were alive) were to get together in one room and be asked this question of who was the best fighter, they'd laugh at the notion. Because they're not fighters, they're entertainers and the only thing they're fighting over each other for is your box office dollar. Does that make sense?

Everyone wants to talk about how Jackie Chan wasn't "trained". Have you all ever heard of the Five Deadly Venoms??? They were trained in Taiwan Opera, but I guess Jet Li could beat them too??? Let's be real. Jet Li is nothing but toilet paper for Jackie Chan... And Jackie is, like, 48 years old!
Chan's My Man    Tuesday, October 01, 2002 at 19:08:55 (PDT)    [64.216.206.26]
First of all Jet li is not an actor. He learned the traditional chinese martial art called Wushu you morons. And Wushu is not for fighting, it's an art. And you cant say that who would win if Jackie fights Jet. Martial art is an art you morons. Put it this way for all ur dummies. If Jackie and Jet are in a real life boxing match with a boxer, they would loose to the boxer. The idea is simple, the boxer adapts real life simulations, he practices the real punches and receives real punches, therefore, he learned his moves faster and better, and soon enough, his real life practices could make him block a punch and adapts to his opponent. So you cant compare an art to real life fighter, they dont fit together. If you want to learn real life fighting, learn the "San Da" or in english terms called "Loose fighting" or "Break fighting", it is different from thos karate, tae kwan do and kungfu and all. People think they are all kool just because they learn the karate, TKD and KF and stuff, and then they are stupid enough to show it off, but what they dont know is, they might loose in a real life fight. They dont truly know the philosophy behind fighting, very unknowledgable. Karate, TKD, KF are all good to improve health and confidence, and sure you are somewhat have the techniques, but if you dont practice them with a person or people everyday, then forget about using ur technique in a real fight. I've seen teenagers who learned karate and got a black belt, thought they were all kool and crap and started fight with whoever pisses them off. This one guy looses to a street fighter. It's simple, the street fighter adapts to real life, but the karate kid didn't know what he learned was truly an art.
So if you want to compare, then you are a moron completely, go get some education for god's sakes.
Tell you the truth, Bruce Lee was one of the best, his Jeet Kun do helps real life fighting.

Asian Brother,

Haven't seen the movie, but it at least it sounds like the jackie/jennifer thing was done with some class. As opposed to some tasteless self-promotion we frequently see from the entertainment industry by, ehem, others. I suppose it's better this way... since we AM are above such things.

Of course if he breaks his foot on a bunch of white guys' arses, it would be THAT much sweeter. LoL.

Jet Li looks like he sniffs butts all day. Jackie Chan has a big nose, but Jet Li's nose makes him look like he smells fart all the time. Who cares if Jet Li had formal training & Jackie was trained in OPERA, (not a circus assholes) Jackie would kick Jet's little booty! Jackie Chan has been fighting a lot longer so I wouldn't talk so fast. Jet Li was a little kid when jackie was doing movies. In fact, if you look at Chinese Connection, he was one of the 'students' at the Japanese "Hon Kyu" school & he was an extra in Enter The Dragon! He was one of those guys that was fighting Angela Mao! For a stuntman, Jackie sure can beat the shit out of somebody! Y'all need to quit hatin' on Jackie.

We wouldn't know for sure who would win in a fight between Jackie Chan vs Jet Li. Nether of these men were actually prize fighter nor did they ever participate in NHB fighting. They are both actors. But, personally I would think that Jackie Chan maybe more popular because his moive are a bit more funnier than Jet Li. But that is just me.

Saw the 'Tuxedo' with Jackie and Jennifer Love. I think the special effects were kind of stupid. Probably to satisfy the kids, no doubt. Then there was the kung fu for those addicts. But for me as an Asian male, the movie delivered some very nice scenes. I could do without the fast motion speed ups and the kung phooey. But I must say that the pairing of Jackie and Jennifer love worked for me. It wasn't the type of making out and sex stuff as there wasn't any so some guys may feel shortchanged but not me. There was a connection on a higher plane. Most females will relate to these scenes where Jackie nurses a couple of bruises Jennifer suffered when they fought with bad guys. Then there were scenes where they danced together pretty well. At the end Jennifer's character revealed her attachment to Jackie and they rolled off together. This is something special for us long neglected Asian guys. I could very easily get addicted to us being the guys who end up with the babes. I'd like much more please. Don't be sidetracked by naysayers who say the film sucked because of this and that reason because I agree as far as those reasons go. However, my brothers, we have our own selfish reasons for enjoying this film; mainly to do with a guy and a girl.

Jet Li all the way,
You are correct. Jet Li is way better at his martial arts skills. On the other hand, his nose is pushed up like a pig. Its unattractive. Jackie Chan's nose is bigger, but not piggish. Jet Li has a smooth and natural style about him. Hes way better than Jackie Chan. That Tuxedo movie absolutely was the worst I have ever seen him at! Jet Li has better taste.

Jackie chan circus performance is very hard training, 10 hours a day.

Don't bash him, he is a very capable fighter.

Toss up, i mean after all jackie is hitting 50's. sheesh.

"Like Jackie Chan is funny but Jet Li's action is better but 1vs1, I dunno who'd win."

Jackie Chan was trained as a professional circus performer. He had no former martial art training. He is more of a stuntman.

Jet Li is a real martial artist. He was picked at a young age by Communist China to undergo intensive martial art training. He went to special martial art school for his primary and secondary education. He won China national championship multiple times when he was in his teen and early 20s.

Jet Li's 'Hero' is going to be the biggest martial arts movie since Enter the Dragon.

'no longer a fan'
you talk about Jet Li's nose, open your eyes have you seen Jackie Chan's nose? haha his nose is bigger than Jet Li. By the way, Jet Li is more known for his looks, he was voted one E's 25 sexiest men.
Jet Li all the way    Monday, September 30, 2002 at 07:45:52 (PDT)    [202.27.176.157]
I think jet li would win because he's much faster than jackie
although jackie got a better education in martial arts

are you frickin crazy? jet li trained at the world famous shao lin temple in china and is like a 10th degree black belt in shao lin, jackie chan learned his martial arts in the circus and is not even a black belt.
Malaysian Sensation    Monday, September 30, 2002 at 07:29:48 (PDT)    [202.188.86.123]
That movie the Tuxedo is lame. I was disappointed. Jennifer Love Hewitt was lamely cast as the love interest. She was not funny at all. Jackie Chan acted differently in this movie than I have ever seen him, he really sucked. What happened to him? I used to be such a fan of his. I now see that he is not a good actor, nor that good at his martial arts style. Jet Li is better, although he is not as attractive. Jet Li has a weird pushed up nose little piggy nose that doesn't make him so goodlooking. So I will say that Jackie Chan has the looks. Jet Li is lacking in the looks department. Now Jet Li cast with Jennifer Love Hewitt? Perfect. Two ugly people. The perfect match. GIve me Chow Yun Fat anyday over BOTH of them. By the way, did I mention to everyone that The Tuxedo SUCKED big time???

Not sure if one is better for the image of Asian male than the other, but i don't like any of Jet Li new movies "The One" etc. Saw them all but didn't like the fake action sequences. Looks very tacky to me, kind of like science fiction movies and i'm not a science fiction guy. I much prefer his older movie like "Once upon a time in China" etc. I much prefer Jackie Chan's movies old and new. Hope "The Tuxedo" does well in the box office.

Jet would roll Jackie's ass. Li is a real life champion, Chan is only a stunt man.
Jackie is no match    Sunday, September 22, 2002 at 02:48:43 (PDT)
Hmm...........I dunno. They are both good. Like Jackie Chan is funny but Jet Li's action is better but 1vs1, I dunno who'd win. I'd have to say there both good! I mean everyone is saying Jackie Chan is better, thats wrong! =(

If they are competing for stunts.. yeah Jet dosen't stand a chance. But, if the're fighting.. we all know Jackie can kiss his goofy @$$ goodbye.. I am sick of those whiners who whine about how Jet Li uses special affects, blah blah, bulls***.. For crying out loud, rent The Fist of Legend. Don't get me wrong, I like them both, but for the image of Asian Americans, I definetally take Jet Li's side, because you don't see any none of those sneaky, weak, pushover, negative AA male sterotype.

I don't care what other people think I think that Jakie Chan and Jet Li are the best martial arts masters in the film business. No matter what they do they both make are the best.
Luke    Friday, August 30, 2002 at 11:42:01 (PDT)
Neither of them is better for the asian image. They are both very good actors and many people like them how and who they are.But if they would fight against eachother I think jet li would win because he's much faster than jackie
although jackie got a better education in martial arts
But just like SNAKEINTHEEAGLES_SHADOW said what matters is to give your best, and they do.

My English isn't very good so don'T laugh about my mistakes if there are some
Tom stapf.steiner@aon.at    Friday, August 23, 2002 at 05:12:06 (PDT)
Well the two performers have their own style of fighting. What matters most is they give their best in and making us wowwwwwww !!!!!!!!! what a kick ...... in every movie.
snakeintheeagles_shadow www.snakeintheeagles_shadow@yahoo.com    Tuesday, August 20, 2002 at 03:46:10 (PDT)
"Jet Li is basically a performer. He studied mainly traditional Wu Shu. He is very acrobatic but he's no real match for Jakie. I think Jakie is really a better fighter though I hate his comedy aspect of things. Jakie looks like he's fighting for his life desperately and barely makes it but if you look at Drunken Master you see he knows exactly ehat he's doing. Other than that, jakie has no limits."
hey, Tzvika this is exactly what I am thinking: I like Jet Li's movies a lot more then those Jackie, but if you'd put in an arena and let them fight for real, i think Jackie would (definately)win.
