JET LI vs JACKIE CHAN: DUELING IMAGES
(Updated
Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 05:56:13 PM)
n late July 2001 the world's two top martial arts stars announced a deal to co-produce and co-star in an action flick to be filmed in late 2002 for a 2003 release. The question naturally arises: what kind of movie could do justice to two such divergent types? Jackie Chan is a highly acrobatic clown who has built his following on a self-effacing counry bumpkin image. Jet Li is a deadly serious warrior who finds it easier to crack a man's neck than a smile.

Now that both global megastars are releasing big-budget Hollywood films at a breakneck pace for seven-figure salaries, they are the most visible Asians in the American filmgoing consciousness. Whether we Asian Americans like it or not, our image is shaped more by the screen exploits and antics of these two broken-English speaking foreigners than by any dozen Asian American actors. In the filmgoing psyche the sober, chaste and deadly-efficient Chinese cop in Kiss of the Dragon is pitted against the nimble goofball in Rush Hour 2.

Which Hong Kong star is better for the image of Asian Americans?

This is an example of the differences between western and eastern outlook on life, the east are pround of the talented exponents of the martial arts, chan from hong kong and li from the mainland........but what do the west do, they say yeah I like him but dont like him and he would beat the s*** out of him etc etc....what a lot of balls..........the chinese learn from and respect their lineage and present masters, the west would have them beat the cr*p out of each other to prove their own induvidual point...no wonder the chinese call westerners barbarians and devils. And p.s. the rumors are true li and chan are going to make a movie together, but I doubt if they will entertain your bloodlust for the sake of entertainment.

Jet Li is No question the better image for Asian American. He provokes dedication, seriousness, and pure determination. Altho He's not a better actor than Jackie Chan, that does not mean jackie chan is better. Remember, they both have studied martial for many years and they both train everyday, but Jet Li posses the ability to kill someone. He study in the shao lin temple in his previous years. Rememeber Shao Lin Kung Fu is rated the number one martial art in the world U wonder why. Jackie was being notice for his films, and in those films he shows martial arts. But to me he performs more stunts than martial arts. Where as Jet Li was being notice from many martial art championship he has won. To Jackie Li who said that their only actors. If I See U And Know Who U are i will beat u...cuz jet li and jackie chan both are true martial artists who have self control and will defend themselves if they have to...

I think that the idea of both of them in the same movie will bring a lot more imagery for the city of Hong Kong and the country of China. It will give not only movie critics something good to write about but it will also give many many fans (action/comedy movie fans)a chance to see what these 2 can do for Hong Kong. I'm a avid Jacky Chan and Jet Li fan...I've seen almost every single one of their movies..not only the ones made here in the states but also the ones made in other countries..But if they both want to star in a movie together....just think how the Box Office ratings will react..not only here but also in China..

In my mind both guys are great. Jackie's style is goofy yet serious and Jet's style is straight up serious. We shouldn't be putting these two icons against eachother! Instead of debateing on who should get a part in a movie, I think we should be figureing out a way to bring them together. I mean think about it... I know some of you wants to see both fighters on the same team kicking the ******* out of the bad guys. Asians are known for sticking together, at least the ones that arent involved in gangs, so dont hate on these two icons.

I like Jet Li, but Jackie Chan is way better!! Jet li's movies are all fake and have very poor story lines. I mean come on, "romeo must die" sucks! Jackie chan fights alot in his movies, and it is real fighting. On the other hand you have Jet li who will fight a couple times in his movies, and most of it is fake, it's like he is trying to make another "Matrix" movie. Jackie Chan would Kick jet's azz any day. It seems like Jet li wants to be like bruce lee because he is very serious, but he ends up making a fool of him self. I'll still watch jet's movies, but i'll fast forward the movie to watch the fighting scenes and take the movie back. "The One"---Give me a break!!!
CHAN IS BETTER THAN li

After watching the Tuxedo, I'm kind of disgusted with Jackie Chan's inability to grasp the English language. Then again Jet Li isn't any better, but why open your mouth if you don't have anything important to say eh? As for WHO promotes a better image for Asian Americans (this is what is really important to asian americans)? Jet Li definitely promotes a more serious image than Jackie Chan who just fools around. In my opinion Jet Li is just a badass, who can't be beat. Wouldn't you want to model someone who's a badass motherf*cker rather than friggin dancing acrobat? Jet Li is just better for the sake of the Asian American image even though we only have a handful of Asian actors

Both are great martial artists, they studied hard since young kids. Jackie is a great martial artist and learned non-chinese hard styles such as korean hapkido with powerfull kicks and preassure points, throws and ground fighting, also he learned many diferent styles of gong-fu in the chinese opera. Jet li is also a great martial artist with a big, enormous reputation not just in China but all over the world. You canīt bet in anyone during a fight, because it never will happen between them. They are examples to kids, and in all of their movies thre is always a lesson to be thougt, and donīt forget, sometimes the best techinique is useless when you have an opponent that can take some punches and still knock you out.

IM going to say something to all you people. Stop calling Jackie Chan a clown. He's is actually a serious martial artist who trains continuously. You people seem to think that having a since of humor makes you a poor martial artist. The reason Jackie Chan tries not to fight is because that is the direct phylosophy of martial arts you imbeciles! And as for Jet li. You people obviously dont know what wushu is. Wushu is basically what you people would call circus stuff also. How do I know this. I've study it. Jet li is a good fighter and like some of you said , hes young and hasn't even reached his peek. So for now I believe Jackie would win. In a couple of years Im sure Jet would win though.
p.s the person who called bruce lee a fake and said he couldn't fight needs to get their facts straight. Bruce lee trained hard. He trained under 2 grandmasters of wing chun. Yip Man , and my sifu, William Cheung. Dont diss them. And dont compare Jet li ,Bruce

If Jet n Jackie is in a real fight, Jet Li will win for sure. But when it comes to acting, Jet Li is nothing but an amateur compare to Jackie Chan that directed over uncountable movies in Hong Kong. In Asia, we call Jackie Chan 'Big Brother', His social status is higher than any super star in Hong Kong. He is not just an actor but somone who contribute a lot for improving Hong Kong movies(such as the jckie chan stunt team), he is a hero and legend that could not be replace. If some English Kunfu wannabe ask me who is better? I'll answer,' We got a lot of Jet Li all over china, but we only got one Jackie Chan.'

I've been a Jackie Chan fan for ages and he has been one of my top and still is even though the Tuxedo didnt turn out so well. Its just one movie that I noticed that didnt turn out so well. It could have been way better but jackie chan still has a chance to score big. Anyways Jet li might be a good fighter and has studied and done some unique martial arts I think hes just to serious I think he is going to be another bruce lee. Besides jackie chan has a better fighting tecnique in his movies if we dont count the tuxedo. He does some stuff that jet li's never done in his movies. I dont have a problem with jet li. In fact I still watch his movies but I think Jackie is way better. A lot of Jet li movies seem to be fake and dont seem real and maybe it is real but from point of view looking at the screen a lot of it looks fake. I bet Jackie Chan and Jet Li if were put in a dojo and fight to the death I think Jackie Chan would win because of his unique, fast hand acrobatic skills. Jackie could do cirles around jet

I am afraid that Jacki Chan is becoming a sellout unfortunately. Ever since he made that dumb movie The Tuxedo. What will he be doing next, shining white people's shoes? Its pathetic. At least Jet Li has better fighting technique, and promotes a better image. If ya ask me, both are pretty sad. But thats just my opinion. I do like some of Jackie's style. He gives Asian Americans a poor poor image of being desperate sad little punks.
Jackie Chan is embarasing

Jet Li is the better one. Jackie Chan is all dramatic arts. Wow! you punch a guy two times and run away. Okay! Jet Li masterd 38 different styles of Kung Fu He'll take Jet Li anytime. Not just that Jet Li studied Kung fu at the shaolin temple and was also known as the king of Wushu in China when he was age 11-16. Jackie Chan? I don't know about him guy!

Well I think that it is obvious that Jet Li is better for the image. Nothing against Jackie Chan but all he does now is AMERICAN COMEDY, I thought this was a comment for which HONG KONG star so what's Jackie doing here? He's almost lost the style of martial arts and he is also getting very old. Jet Li is known for his real talent, not for a few laughs like Jackie Chan. How can you compare Rush Hour with any of Jet Li's film? Anyway, Jackie was just a co-star in Rush Hour.
Jet Li's the man I'm sticking to.

[The question we posed was who is better for the AA image, not who'd win in a fight. Let's get back on topic. --Ed]
What I heard is that Jet Li became an an actor because he was qualified for
national champion of Wushu in China.
He was technically a martial artist, while Jakie learned circus at firstand then
he learned martial arts.(That's why
Jakie performs stunts by himself)
So I think Jet Li can take Jakie Chan
for sure and even considering their age
Jet is younger and faster..and he posses
something like assasination techniques
but Jakie...not really..
And 1more thing..Jet Li is more serious
hero type while Jakie Chan is comedy hero character..

To ask the question of who would win in a fight is just plain stupid. Both of them have unique, and different fighting styles and should each be equally respected. And yes, Jet Li is a real martial artist, and I'd like to see you mention that he is just a wimp to his face.

i think that jet li is the bomb and is way better than jackie chan although i like them both. I like jet li's movies more because he fights with action and is serious unlike jackie. Jackis is a joke. Jet Li can wupp the ass of jackie chan. They're both still tight though

"I'm sure if Jackie Chan, Jet Li or anyone else like Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, etc. (and Bruce Lee, if he were alive) were to get together in one room and be asked this question of who was the best fighter, they'd laugh at the notion. Because they're not fighters, they're entertainers and the only thing they're fighting over each other for is your box office dollar. Does that make sense?" Bruce Lee (if he were alive) isn't a fighter? Oh boy, three words for you buddy.. Jeet Kun Do!!!
