ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES
WHAT DO WF LIKE BEST ABOUT AM?
(Updated
Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 05:52:04 PM)
hen many people see a pretty white woman with a good-looking Asian man the question that pops into their heads is "Why's she with him?" more often than "Why's he with her?"

It's only natural. We've been told so often about the desirability of white women that we simply presume that an Asian man too would find a pretty white women desirable. But we are left to guess at her possible motives for being with him. Not that there aren't hundreds of thousands of handsome, charming and successful Asian men who, by all rights, should be attractive to women of any race. But we are all too aware that American society has built up many negative preconceptions about Asian men that would take extraordinary consideration, some special X factor, to overcome.

The many examples of famous AM/WF couples (Mr/Mrs Yo-Yo Ma, Ming Tsai, Scott Oki, Charles Wang etc), don't really help, merely reinforcing the common presumption that the AM must be wealthy and able to provide an exceptional degree of financial security, material comfort or social status. Another common suspicion is that he must be unusually charming, cultured or sexually gifted. Then there's the old standby -- that the woman must have some odd fixation on Asian men or Asian culture.

Of course intellectually we know better. Just as there are many independent-minded Asian men who see through blonde bimbo stereotypes to the real qualities of white women, there are white women who ignore stereotypes about Asian men. Which leads to the question: What's the real draw? Is it the black hair? educational level? smooth skin? cultural values? upslanting eyes? personality and character traits? Here's a chance for white women who love Asian men to set the record straight.

Why shouldn't we use the term "oriental"?
Here's a quote from ncmonline.com: “The word ‘oriental’ carries with it racist overtones and anyone who thinks that those offended by it are just hypersensitive do not understand the implications of what it means to be stereotyped,” Washington Rep. Velma Veloria told PNews.

If you guys are talking about Fez, always considered him Hispanic.
The 80's show guy looks Corean.
Oriental isn't bad, it just doesn't fit right. It's like calling white people white.
If I were white, I'd rather be called English, French, German etc. instead of white.
East Asian does not equal Asian. Asian includes Indians, who are far from "Oriental".

As far as I can tell Oriental is not a derogatory term. So why are so many Asian sensitive to non-Asians using this term? Is it because we have been trained to react negatively to a perfectly harmless word? I don't know why people feel insulted by Venice Beach's comments when it is obvious she never intended to insult. Come on folks, being hypersensitive over harmless semantics is very much counterproductive. I am sure all of us are intelligent enough to know if we are being intentionally insulted or not. So why not behave like an intelligent human being rather than a trained Pavlovian dog?

here's some news: men like women, in general.
as for preferences: blonde, brunette, whatever - i just dig white girls.
and oriental is an adj used to describe a vase or a rug. i believe the operative term is 'asian.'

Lordt78 it's not correct to call males NOR females oriental!! That's just stupid to apply the term to only a specific gender.

Just my opinion,
Blondes are only fascinating if they're natural blondes. It makes them special because natural blondes are becoming more and more rare.
Personally, I find dark haired women more appealing. Speaking about certain lower extremities, if it's light, it doesn't look right.

That guyz from the 70's [you mean 80's] show question. I just talked to one of my friend today and he said the guy looked flipino. But to me he looks more like either korean or japanese (I might be wrong).
Something to learn:
we, "oriental men" you called us, would rather be call asain men. hehe I think this sounds better.
And you ask, if we Asains like girls with blonde hair. ok, I can't speak for all asain but I certainly do.
