Julie Chen to Host CBS's Big Brother

he winsome Chinese American anchor of the CBS Morning News and news anchor of The Early Show will be adding Big Brother to her hosting duties. The show is similar in concept to CBS's wildly popular "reality series" Survivors in which ten strangers are thrown together on a tropical island with little more than a full camera crew. Big Brother will lock 10 strangers inside a house for 89 days. One contestant will be voted out every other week until three remain. Viewers will then vote via the internet to decide who gets to win first, second and third prize. The house is actually an elaborate set to be built inside a lot on the CBS Studio Center in Studio City. The show will air five nights a week but four of the nights will consist of edited video footage of the daily goings on inside the house. Chen will host the weekly live show on Thursday evenings, interviewing ejected contestants and overseeing a studio audience panel of their friends and relatives. The show will debut July 5.
Julie Chen's rise at CBS has been meteoric. She came on air last June as a substitute anchor on the Morning News and This Morning and was only recently hired as the regular news anchor. Before that she was a reporter and anchor for the New York CBS affiliate. She got her start in 1990 as a production associate at the Los Angeles ABC affiliate. The New York native graduated from USC with a degree in English and broadcast journalism. (6/22/00)
