Upon returning from her June 2003 European tour Branch took a few jetlagged moments to respond to our questions:
GS: What are the most important ways in which your music has evolved between The Spirit Room and Hotel Paper?
MB: Most of my own experiences are on this album, and more personal feelings.
GS: Which track on Hotel Paper has the most meaning for you, and why?
MB: Empty Handed
GS: Which of your songs has come closest to realizing your artistic vision?
MB: Empty Handed is my favorite song on the album. I was really proud of myself after we recorded it.
GS: Tell us a bit about how you write your songs.
MB: It comes from inside of me. I never know when I will write a song. They just happen.
GS: What is the best thing about becoming a successful artist? How has it changed your life?
MB: The biggest adjustment is how everyone likes my music. It's so great to see all the love -- it's overwhelming.

GS: Has there been a downside to your success?
MB: So far, [I] have not found any.
GS: Is there an artist whose music and career you particularly admire?
MB: Sheryl Crow.
GS: Give us a picture of a typical day, starting from when you wake up in the morning to the time you drop off to sleep.
MB: There are no typical days! When I'm off it's mostly me relaxing around the house in my pjs! Reading, movies, shopping, shopping & shopping.
GS: We understand you are part Indonesian. What kind of connection, if any, do you feel toward your Asian heritage? Tell us a bit more about your family background.
MB: My folks gave me a firm strength of who I was. I was not alone.
GS: Has your Asian heritage had any impact on your music or career? Do you have any special message to your Asian American fans?
MB: No, not really--
I'm proud of it. I just want them to know so they can identify.
I am proud of my Asian brothers and sisters. They have been very supportive. Thanks!
