WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Hey the nit picky Asian dad is back and I have a new annoyance for you.
I'm watching Leno one night and when it goes to commercial I see this young Asian figure skater who is apparently waiting in the wings before she goes out on the ice. I see her Asian mother talking to her (in a clearly American accent) and she tells her "this is for you" and she hands her two envelopes. She says "one if you win and one if you don't" and quickly leaves. Her daughter opens up the first and its a card that syas she is so very special signed "Love Mom" the second card is the exact same thing....awwwwww its a Hallmark ad. That was sweet and clever and its really nice to see any sign of the existence of Asian families and parenting on T.V.
But here's the annoying part. Wheres Dad????? I more or less came to two possible conclusions. He is either dead or he doesn't give a damn. I'll explain how I came to this conclusion. First off the child is clearly not mixed. In fact the casting director got a mother that looks Chinese or Korean and a duaghter who looks Malay. So I guess maybe dad is a Malay or maybe there is an off chance he is Indian and thier daughter looks Malay. Anyway he is still either dead or a horrible father. The reason other senarios are not possible is because even if they were divorced, that would be no excuse for him missing what seems to be a very important moment in his daughters life. If he were on a business trip then he could at least send a Hallmark to explained how he felt and how much he loved her. No ....all we have is "love Mom". More or less if the man is alive, he has no visible excuse to not be there or at least taken the minimal effort to SIGN THE DAMN CARD!!!
Damn card....listen to me. What was meant to be a touching Hallmark ad has me saying DAMN CARD. Why? Because along with the invisible Asian hero or romantic interest exists the invisible Asian dad. This ad only drives that point home with a hammer to my head. An Asian American mother and her Asian American daughter and absolutely no sign of dad. I know Hallmark wasn't trying to insult me as an Asian father but guess what...they did.
I suppose I'll have to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume Dad bit the dust some time back. So far back that it is not an issue in her daughters performance or her confidence. Or perhaps she needs to be told she is special because dad is recently worm food and mom moving in with her new white boyfriend has emotionally alienated her......yikes now I really sound bitter. Oh well, heres to you dead, invisible and forgotten Asian dad. Your absense from this ad is so vivid and your silent scream is deafening to me and for 20 seconds overshadows all else.

I thought FOB could mean those who can't speak English, or those who dress funny a.k.a. provincial clothes, etc.

F.F.8 was alright. in ff8 it also had a wm/af lookin characters. even though she had a white surname, u always see her as an asian. i mean, come on now, she had black hair and how many wf do u see have black hair.
dont get me wrong. im not one of those am who cant get af. i can get my fair share of asian chicks checkin me out(not tryin to say im the shit here) but i choose not to since i just started college. i gotta focus on school ya know.
