WHAT YOU SAY

ABCDAD I saw that commercial too and I thought the same thing!
"Where the hell is the father?"
I watch ice skating competitions on television and I attend the live events, and let me tell you that for the major competitions BOTH PARENTS ARE PRESENT!
It's very expensive to send a daughter to skating lessons, or afford private coaching which in most cases are paid for by Dad.
So, a father is going to want to see where the hell all his hard earned cash went and will attend his daughter or son's major competitions.
At the major competitions that I've attended BOTH parents were there.
In that commercial, the dad was clearly missing. If he was away on business or perhaps sick, they would have had his signature and an extra note somewhere on that card. They didn't.
What the hell was those advertisers thinking? I enjoy those tender mother and daughters ads, but where was dad?
Was he dead?
Was he a deadbeat dad?
Was they divorced?
Did he abandon his family?
Was he uninvolved with his daughter's interests?
Was he incapacitated physically?
Was he in prison?
Was the mom an unwed mother?
The next time I view that commercial I'm going to try to view the mother's left hand to see if there's a wedding ring there.
I love a mystery.

ABCDad:
The best one is that the Dad was too busy in the Chinese Resturant cooking and cleaning and slaving away to support the kid's expensive hobby for skating!!!

ABCDad:
I have a few more scenarios:
1.The dad had an accident on the way to the rink and couldn't make it.
2.The dad sent a card but it wasn't a Hallmark.
3.The mother married a FOB who sent a card in indian or malay.
4.Maybe the dog ate it.

Lucie Lui,
I understand that point. I'm just referring to the rare case in the USA. Where some Asian who maintain fluency in their native tongue are considered to be FOB. An instance where Asian maintaning a fluency in English to be ABA. Where upon closer inspection those assumption based on language ability could be wrong.

Oh, Christ, I can't believe that we're bitching just because the Hallmark commercial didn't show the "missing" Asian dad! We whine when Asians aren't on TV, and then we whine even harder when they are. Calm down! It's just a damn corporate advertisement. ABCDad is showing his insecurities when he talks the non-existent conspiracies surrounding this trite and sentimental drivel of a commercial. Also, you misspelled "absence."

ABCDad,
The Atari 2600...ah the birth or home video games. I got a Colecovision as a kid. But my parents never really like playing that stuff. My kid is 3 and he like the powerpuff girls cartoon and Playstation game. I let him win 90% the time, because he has such an adorable smile when he is beating the crap out of Dad's character. I beat him mercilessly 10% of the time, just to let him know that life is not full of easy wins.
As for your gripe about the Hallmark card. It is hilarious. I usually don't even pay that much attention to a commercial. But I'm sure there is a demographic reason there is no guy in the card commerical. Guys rarely buy cards to begin with. It is a very girly thing to do.
Check out the finacial services commercials. Citigroup, Etrade.com, etc. Always an asian male in those commericals. They know AM are into the money and managing it well.
