WHAT YOU SAY

Okay, I will put my neck on the block again. As I stated a while back, baseball (the weakest of the big 3) and to a greater extent individual sports like tennis and golf are not going to do that much for the image of Asian Americans. Until we can bang with the big boys in basketball, football, and the not so mainstream boxing not much will be changed. This in not about dissing other sports or the achievement of Asian and Asian American athletes, heck I would love to be in the position of all these athletes in term of making millions playing a game -- any game! But since the issue at hand is which Asian athlete in sports are changing the image of Asian Americans, I don't want to be guilty of self delusional. It's admirable for you to stick to your favorite sport, but let's get real. The only "great asian hope" right now is Yao Ming. Why do you think there's so much hoopla - pun intended - surrounding his draft status?

Rocky,

The Philippines has countless winners???
LOL!!!!!!!!! That's very humorous. When's the last time a Filipino ever won an athletic event outside of the Philippines, besides that Filipino minor league team that won the minor league world series like 15 yrs ago; later to find out that most of the guys on the team were like 18-19 yrs old playing against 11-12 yr old American kids... LOL! By the way, the Philippines doesn't boast the best boxers in Asia. The title is easily owned, hands down, by Korea. Koreans dominate Asia in boxing, wrestling, Tae Kwon Do, and also do just as well in Judo, if not better than Japan in Judo.
If you actually knew anything about boxing, you would know that Korean boxers are ranked higher by the IBF, WBA, and WBF than any Filipino boxer. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm sure you'll find something you Filipinos are good at. At least you guys are good DJ's.. LOL.

Rocky,

Korea dominates Asia in boxing. During one of the more recent Asian games, Korea swept all gold in boxing. The Philippines are not close to the Korean boxers. Get your facts straight.

Those of you who claims Michelle Kwan never won anything, go check up her record book before you make an a$$ out of yourself. For the record she won 4 world championship titles and 6 US national titles plus a whole bunch of titles from the Grand Prix series. She also earned more perfect scores than anyone in Figure Skating.
She's done the most to promote the AA image because of her great sportsmanship. She's not a quitter.

who gives a s*** about Jeanette Lee. I'm Korean, and I could care less that shes also Korean. Have you seen her on ESPN2? she wears geisha outfits and makeup, I think she just looks like a cheap slut. So what if shes good at pool and beer-bellied white pool players from New Jersey and Nebraska mastrubate to her pictures? I think there are much prettier girls than her, Asian or not.

Rocky
Is that so? I think Judo, Taekwondo are more "macho" than boxing, prissy boy. When is the last time a Flip won the Gold in boxing?

C-17 globe-master,

Sadaharu Oh's father was Chinese and his mother was Japanese. However, he was basically treated as Chinese in Japan at the time and did face discrimination along with the other non-Japanese asian players. He said that the discrimination was one of the motivating factors that propelled him and his friend Isao Harimoto to experience incredible success in their baseball careers. There were a few times when he left Japan, he had problems re-entering due to immigrations issues.

He is currently the manager of the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks of the Japan League. Earlier this year, the Hawks played a few games against the Orix Blue Wave in Taiwan. He received a tremendous welcome as he is revered in Taiwan. He is the all time home-run hitter in Japan League history. He shares the most home-run record in a season (55 hrs) with current Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes OF Tuffy Rhodes who is an American.

Jeanette Lee was very mean to our Asian group when we tried to invite her to give a talk. She said that she doesn't identify with Asians.

There's nothing else can define "MACHO SPORTS" other than BOXING. Therefore, it should be the Philippines in Asia who has countless winners. A total handsdown.

all i gotta say, Dat Nguyen, part of that Wrecking Crew at A&M, drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, first started off on special teams and now he's starting middle line backer...not bad for the son of first generation shrimpers. its time asians in american started showing everybody what we can do, no matter what sport it is.
