asian domina:

Hmmm reconsidered what I wrote about microminis after I read your post... I guess they make 6' footers kinda awkward looking. Sigh, I guess I just think microminis are a really hard thing to do right (in my opinion)-- I mean, how can a 6 inch wide strip of fabric wound tightly around the ass look anything but in-style this season (according to the mags,) young, sexy and attention-getting if you're model-thin and totally too-small and out of proportion if you're not so thin? I should add that personally, I'm completely fashion fad phobic and don't feel like myself when I'm wearing anything that puts forth a blatantly sexy image. I suppose this just shows how objective looking good/looking bad is-- while I'd look like an idiot bouncing around with my headphones on in my normal happy-go-lucky fashion in a micro with legs flying everywhere, someone fierce and fashionable who walks proudly could carry it off. So I definitely agree with the Carpe Diem part of your post!! Even in real life, some women just look great if they know what they wear is made for them~!
I also agree that older women trying to follow young trends is just too much and in a bad way... I mean, no granny wears Britney Spears worthy metallic hiphuggers without intention, right? It definitely makes me feel uncomfortable to see old women wearing glitzy clothes, because to me, it seems as though they're trying to draw attention to their sexual physicality and can't stand not to be noticed by people in the streets. Frankly, even when I was a 10 year old I knew that people's sexual appeal (in the generic mass-appeal sense, which is what I'm talking about now) deteriorates when they're reaching 40, 50, 60 and so on. Personally, I think people who are beautiful in youth on the outside can age beautifully as well, as long as they pay attention to the that fact that the way you play up your look is perceived by others as a reflection of your individuality. I was kinda disturbed by this commercial on TV for medical insurance for old people-- the woman on the TV, maybe 70 or 80 years old was made up with bright green eye makeup and bright pink lipstick. She looked like a prostitute for 20-somethings with Mrs. Robsinson complexes! Honestly, she could have been a model granny had she just left her face natural, maybe just a touch of blush or whatever, to add a healthy glow. She had a energetic presence on TV and sparkling blue eyes underneath that crusty eyeshadow... sigh. I guess I am just fully accepting of the fact that one day my skin will be leathery and hope that I do not feel the need to go to desperate means to feel beautiful. I feel as though being young necessarily brings out a selfish outlook on things, and as I age I will have a greater capacity to be less vain and to feel comfortable with mostly spending my time acquainting myself with the non-me part of the world. All I'm tryin' to say is-- Damn, I hope the last thing that's on anyone's mind (in a decent, ideal world) when they're nearing the end of my life is emulating some pop-star who's only seen like, the first decade of her life...

Many of the posting refer to simplicity of colors. I am visiting China and I see many fashionably dressed women have beautiful patterns and artistic designs on their dresses. They (the clothing and the women) are very attractive.
I think American Asians could definitely learn some elegance from their across the pacific sisters.

poor depressed unfashionable--

I was laughing myself silly when I read your comments: you said it babe!

On short skirts:

I like microminis: I get loads of compliments on my legs and I'm only 5'5". Micros look very slutty when you're tall--unless, of course, you're just posing for a magazine or catalogue. Sorry.

BTW, it's best to enjoy your micros now while you're young. Don't be like one 40-some-year-old, 4'8" Oxford don I know at an all-women's college who got dumped by her hubby for an undergrad and now dresses like one: from little cardis and micros to plats. (But that's another story...like the 80-year-old I saw in a micromini sundress.) Can we say desperate?? Girls live for it now--the bare midriffs, pierced navels, tight jeans--and wear them as long as you've got a good figure and can pass for under 30. (Of course, the question is, do you know if you still can??)

As they say, Carpe diem!

petite girly,
explore a little and find a look that suits you. I'm 5'2" (95 lbs) and ur Gap ankle-tooshort, regular-toolong/big angst sounded all too familiar to me! :o) Most likely, you won't look particularly willowy or long legged no matter what, so maybe you'll be happier with a look that's unique to you and doesn't scream out "I wanna look like a tall girl." I personally avoid trendy looks like the plague and just go with really simple, solid colors with the occasional printed shirt. I like classic, comfy, low-cut cords from A&F (they have size 00 now!) and hip hugging, boot cut cords from Pac Sun, slim-cut cotton t shirts in different solid colors. I've been much more comfortable and happy with my looks since I stopped trying to acheive looks that involve showing too much leg. Low maintenance dressing rules, as long as it goes with your style and personality. Microminis look really wrong on short girls I think. Anything hootchie can look vaguely classy only on girls with Victoria's secret model bodies... I hope this friendly advice from a fellow 5'2"-er helps. :o)

sure, why don't we just break the bank and go get that glove leather trench coat that will be destroyed in the first light rain, and be sure it's in the prettiest pale creamy tan! that way it can get ruined even when you cram yourself into the filthy subway where all the other sardines are packed on their way to work --oh and be sure that some little trash leans up against you with their scruffy cordura nap sack so that you can get scuff marks too even if it doesn't rain... that way you don't need to wait for it to get wet to be damaged...!

I wish Asian chicks would get more variety into their wardrobe. Instead of the usual black peacoats in the fall and winter, how about a cool tan leather coat, or a sherpa denim jacket? I mean c'mon ladies... you don't win many points for creativity, even though you're elegant.

As a fashion designer (http://www.dainne.com ) I wear mostly my clothes matching them with Manolo sky scraper or Jimmy Choo boots, sunglasses by Prada that I got in Milano Aug. 2001. For me I have to see it & decide. Now I'm lusting on a Gucci "Bondage".

It is sickening to see super skinny Asian girls wearing very tight and skimpy clothes. They look like Skeletor with no curve. I also think brown is a very ugly color for Asian. I, myself, like bright or pastel colours.

Petite grly:

You're young so you might still grow. Just keep swimming, stretching, and eating properly: you need lots calcium and protein...

Everyone does heels with jeans nowadays, including 6' tall girls. Don't ask why.

But also remember that some of the hottest women are also short. Halle Berry (5'2"), Judy Garland (4'11"), Janet Jackson (5'1"), Madonna (5'4") Shania Twain (5'3"), and Tina Turner (5'3") obviously didn't let their height get to them. Hell, I'd rather be any of those women than some stupid supermodel who's going to be forgotten once her skin starts to sag.
