To Dean Cain:
I don't understand why you're putting a "blood quantum" on who can call themselves, or consider themselves Asian. The real Dean Cain is only 1/4 Japanese, so he's not Asian?
True, he's not a "hapa" in the literal sense, but he IS Asian, after all.
Your logic about "not calling a person who's 3/4 Asian and 1/4 white a white person" doesn't really make much sense. Essentially, whether you are 3/4 Asian and 1/4 white, you ARE STILL WHITE.

In Hawaii, where I'm originally from, a Native Hawaiian is "Hawaiian", whether they have 1/4, or a 1/16 of actual blood in them.
So whether you have 1/4, 1/2 of whatever "race", doesn't it really only come down to what you identify yourself as? And really, who cares or has time to do the math on people's blood quantums? It's ridiculous.

Also, to Jay...wonder what Dean Cain's mom looks like? Not all white people are blond, blue eyed, and fair complected. Maybe she has dark features as well, that could have possibly contributed to the real Dean Cain's look of "more hapa-ness."

Things to think about...........    Thursday, February 07, 2002 at 16:17:57 (PST)
Dean Cain:
"You wouldn't consider someone who was 3/4ths asian as white or hapa, so likewise, you wouldn't consider him, who is 3/4ths white as an asian or hapa."
Or maybe you would, depending not on racial makeup but on culture and personal values. Don't try boxing people up by their race. I know some 3/4 white kids who, raised up in Asia, living in a very Asianized household, attending a local school rather than the local American/international school, are a lot more Asian than some 100% ethnic Asians I meet in other places.

I said:

You wouldn't consider someone who was 1/4th white as asian or hapa, so likewise, you wouldn't consider him who is 1/4th white as an asian or hapa.

I actually meant :)

"You wouldn't consider someone who was 3/4ths asian as white or hapa, so likewise, you wouldn't consider him, who is 3/4ths white as an asian or hapa."

To put it mathematically, Dean Cain is ½ hapa and ½ White. He could pass for being a full hapa like me, though. His Japanese hapa dad might be one of those more Asian-looking hapas cause two ¾ White and ¼ Asian kids I’ve seen on the U.S. Mainland look a bit more White than Dean Caine.
