WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Alhambra is not exactly a "richer" part of the SGV in case you didn't know. I think they are talking more on the lines of San Marino, Arcadia or South Pasadena.
East San Gabriel Valley like Walnut or Roland Heights is ok, but it's really inland and gets very hot and smoggy in the summer. It's too far from the beach for my taste.

I recently read in the newspaper about Irvine getting more Asians there. It's probably not as concentrated as Monterey Park/Alhambra/San Gabriel/Arcadia or Hacienda Heights/Rowland Heights, but growing. Many of the shops concentrate around Culver/Walnut or Culver/Jeffrey. There are about 14,000 Chinese living in Irvine (~10% of the city's population), 7,000 Koreans, 5,000 Vietnamese, 3,500 Filipinos, and x number of Japanese. Many move there because of the schools, UC Irvine, and technology jobs. The feel in Irvine is more suburban than say Alhambra or Monterey Park and homes in Irvine tend to be more expensive. The city may seem boring to many and conservative, but I've noticed that most of the places that open late there are the Asian places.

I've lived in Rancho Palos Verdes (South Bay) where many wealthy Asians reside, but there is little "mixing" with the wealthy white folks there. We are "accepted"-- i.e. not overtly discriminated against-- but our cultural heritage is not celebrated in the way it is in the San Gabriel Valley. There, you have to admit, it's really quite different in San Marino/Alhambra/Monterey Park compared to Hacienda Hts/Rowland Hts/Walnut. In the latter, there is a critical mass of assimilated AA who are also interested in maintaining some cultural practices, manifested particularly in the quality and number of Asian grocery stores and great restaurants. For AA's, I'd say the East San Gabriel Valley is the place to be!

I could buy half of Glendora for $730K. Where are you shopping? -you are going to get ripped off you dumb gullable F.O.B. In San Marino $730K, will buy you a tiny shack.
BTW, Sugar Land is ok, Houston is not so don't kid yourself.

Worldlyman,
man u said it. i use to want to move out to San Fran. or L.A. but now as i'm older, i've relized Houston is a pretty cool place to be. sure, its hot as hell in the summer, but as long as u got A.C., then ur fine.
Katy? KATY?! KATY SUCKS! its pretty much not asian friendly. it too far of a drive from the houston and theres not even anything to do. Katy Mills mall sucks! its nothin but an out-let mall. they cant beat the Galleria.
Bellaire is pretty much an asian street. from highway 6 to beltway 8, you'll see nothing but asian stores and places to eat.

I'm considering moving from Irvine to somewhere in the SGV. How is Temple City and Arcadia? Or, Duarte or Glendora? What are the best choices?

I HATE LIVING OUT HERE IN CLAREMONT!!
I find myself going home in Glendora when I don't have class. All Claremont is, is a prissy town. There is absolutely NOTHING to do out here. Stick with the SGV.. Glendora to Arcadia and surrounding affluent areas. Don't move to the Inland Empire.. unless you want to be bored to death.
Claremont Sucks

Some of the supposedly "richer" sections of the SG Valley like Alhambra.........still seem like ghettos compared to nouveaux Houston's Fort Bend County areas (like Katy, Sugar Land, First Colony, etc.) and Brazoria County (Pearland) where the wealthier Asians live.
In fact, housing and supermarkets in general in Los Angeles seem like ragged overthoughts compared to the variety that's easily found here in Houston (to the person who placed Houston among Oakland and Brooklyn).
I mean all you BASICALLY see in the sprawl of LA is just Ralph's, Ralph's and more Ralph's............the same boring look.
I'm surprised that France's Auchan HyperMarkets have not seen fit to place a chain in Los Angeles yet (that I know of). There's no place like Auchan's.
LA has all the great delis..........but Houston's got the better food shopping.

I have to agree that Glendora, Walnut, West Covina, and all of East SGV is trash. If you can't afford to live on the West Side of the SG Valley, I guess East SGV will do.
There is no comparrison however to SGV West a.k.a. The Real San Gabriel Valley. My family thought about moving East from Pasadena but then came to their senses when they realized how much of a nightmare communte to downtown LA they would have to endure if they moved out to the boonies.
This is fun, keep it coming =P

I'll tell you a couple things, there are way more F.O.B's in Arcadia and Alhambra etc. than there are in Glendora, Walnut, and Hacienda Heights... etc.. just go to Santa Anita Mall and you'll hear not one word of english unless the people are workers. Or visit the schools where half the kids are in english as a second language programs. Arcadia's rich asians have all that money because they go win money at the racetrack and sell drugs on the weekends..and as for San Marino.. it's a tiny little city so no wonder it is so wealthy you only have 12,000 people living there. Just 10 miles away is Glendora that has no "poor man's mansions" like in arcadia amongst inconsistent neighborhoods. 45% of Glendora redients make over $150k a year, so don't say there aren't any jobs out there. I went looking at houses in Glendora and the cheapest 3,000 sqft. home i could find was $730,000. And that wasn't even in a gated community...
yeah, really
