WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Chirs, you have to grow thicker skin in LA. In LA people don't hold back their true feelings or thoughts like they do in the closet racist bay area. It's all on the table here. No bottled up emotions or tip toeing around the issue of race. It's so freakin' refreshing compared to SF, you'll get used to it. If someone calls you a name find out why and set them straight, because they are probably paling around with you. If not call them something back and I gaurentee you won't have a problem again. LA is fun because you can joke around about race both ways here, it's not just whites making fun of asians. There is no racial majority. Good luck with the ladies, don't be shy because that won't get you anywhere here. People in LA especially Asians are more confident and vocal here in LA because they feel comfortable. You'll get used to it, good luck.
LA is racist? Not really...

WORD Chris, I've been called all kinds of names too, given dirty looks, and treated very condenscendingly in LA/So Cal, and it WASN'T only from white people either!!!
I want the truth about la la land to be known, that under all this B.S. of multicultural utopia, there is just a single spark required for an all out major race war.

Right. I just have to weigh in on the LA/Bay Area debate.
I've only lived in LA for a short time, and already I've been called a "Gook", "Charlie" (even though I'm Chinese) and referred to on many occasions as Oriental.
In the Bay Area, people assumed that I was intelligent and talented because I was Asian. I dated a lot of white girls, and all of my friends were a mixed bag of white, Indian, black, hispanic, and Asian.
You can yell at each other until you're blue about which city has worse traffic or real estate problems, but for me there should be only one issue when you're a room full of Asian people comparing which city is more hospitable: WHICH CITY IS LESS RACIST.

steve:
most affluent people don't worry about gangs because they don't have to live amongst them--not because the gangs don't exist or are not doing damage.
prostitution, extortion, etc. go on every day in s.f. chinatown--which differs greatly from l.a. chinatown, which is comprised mostly of senior citizens.
wah ching, hop sing tong, etc. are very old gangs and have contributed as much to chinatown as they have harmed it.
you have the guts to insult these old triads on the internet where your identity is unknown, but something tells me that's all you can be--a shit-talker on the internet.

Furthermore, what's with all the name calling? If you want conduct a reasonable conversation, please don't resort to such juvenile antics. You are starting to sound like your former mayor. No, I'm not a little kid. I graduated from college two years ago.
Don't act so clueless, my friend. You must not be Chinese. Triads affect all Chinese business men. All of the HK film industry is run by Triads. Small store owners constantly live in fear of them. Don't you hear about Chinese restaurants going up in flames all the time? Accident? I don't think so. It is just a cover up in fear of retribution. I never said I bragged about gangs. I'm not even in one, so why the hell should I care? It's just a fact that they are all around us. Maybe you just can't accept it. If it makes you feel any better, I'll just use my real name. There, is that any better?!

Steve, they exist. It is better to acknowledge their existence instead of being ignorant to the fact. Besides, i'm not criminal. I'm just interested in crime. Someday, I plan to join either the US Marshals, or some city's Asian gang task force.
