WHAT YOU SAY

steve to the truth--

san mateo county is not where most of the asian wealth is.

ever heard of contra costa county? the east bay is hardly just oakland. there's richmond, monte claire, concord, berkeley, walnut creek, etc. some of those cities have a substantial asian population who have been there for while. many of the houses in lamorinda are worth at least 1.5 million.

anyhow, as depicted in your post, there is more integration in the bay area--there is not one city that is comprised primarily of one ethnic group.
and that is why there is more racial harmony.

as i stated, i love l.a. and am having a blast here. but i won't deny that racism is more prevalent here.

tsj:

cantonese people will mostly be found in monterey park (in s.g.v.) taiwanese people are usually in alhambra and san gabriel. still, the cities are very close and you can still find cantonese people in the latter two cities.

but it's true, taiwanese people can be a bit exclusive.

"East Bay -Filipinos, Blacks, Some Chinese as well as mostly low income whites. San Mateo County is the closest thing the Bay has to LA's westside in terms of wealth, but it's mostly newly made tech money and the area lacks class. But even San Mateo County is kind of trashy looking with crappy houses, ugly ratty streets and tacky little shops everywhere."

Pleasanton, Orinda, Moraga, Piedmont, Danville, Blackhawk, all East Bay cities, with it's fair share of 2 million dollar plus homes. I could go on an on. Low income, huh?

Kind of dirty and crappy, huh? Oh, like LA is the cleanest city in the whole wide world.

How long did you stay in the Bay, Steve, if ever? You seem to have a lot of generalizations (evem more than someone who has lived here his whole life) about this area, and I think you are probably just exaggerating for laughs. Shoot, the way this site is set up, with no registration, and allowing people to use random names, with no e-mail requirement, no one even knows your identity. I bet you just love that, don't you?

I disagree with you on a couple of points. First, LA is not what the rest of America will look like in the next 15 years, only parts of the U.S. Second, LA like all other cities is very segregated. I do agree with penelope on her description of how LA is divided up racially but don't agree with her idea that this is not the case in the Bay Area.

In the Bay it looks like this: Santa Clara County -Chinese, Asian Indian, Mexicans. San Mateo and Marin County -Whites, Jews. SF -Chinese, dwindling Japanese population and others, East Bay -Filipinos, Blacks, Some Chinese as well as mostly low income whites. San Mateo County is the closest thing the Bay has to LA's westside in terms of wealth, but it's mostly newly made tech money and the area lacks class. But even San Mateo County is kind of trashy looking with crappy houses, ugly ratty streets and tacky little shops everywhere. the truth, your post has good intentions but it's a little naive. Racial barriers will not be solved as easily as you seem to think. Don't get me wrong, I hope you are right. I do think the racial situation in LA is improving but it is because we all are living in separate areas.

"LA is what the rest of mainstream America will look like in about 15 years. The rest of America will go through what LA is going through right now -There will be ethnic isolation, racial tensions and yes even outbreaks of violence."

Isn't LA the city with the highest number of race riots? Doesn't the Watts riots date back to the 60's? Not to mention the Rodney King riots. If LA is 15 years ahead of the pack, should other cities be expecting a riot soon too?

"and it's very apparent when a person of a certain ethnic background is in a city "his people" normally would not be in. aside from le prive, it's very rare for a chinese person to hang out in ktown. korean people in chinatown? unlikely. blacks in chinatown? bums, maybe. blacks in the san gabriel valley? close to never."

Also, this is just based on personal experience, so it may not be totally accurate. I'm Cantonese/Toi San, and when I was in SGV, it seemed like it was mostly Taiwanese there, and they were not very welcoming. What parts of LA do the HK people live in?
