WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Well, today marks the 10 year anniversary of the L.A. riots--commonly referred to by the Los Angeles Koreatown population as Sa-i-gu.
Ten years ago, Korean Americans suffered betrayal by our government. The Rodney King verdict triggered anger within the Black population and a seemingly uncontrollable riot ensued. Though our government sent in National Guards to control the looting, those guards only protected Beverly Hills and the other "more prominent" parts of Los Angeles, leaving Korean Americans to protect their own stores and fend for their own community. The LAPD, likewise, retreated and were nowhere in sight.
As a result of this chaos, numeous Korean shopkeepers who were trying to protect their stores were stabbed, beaten, even shot. Radio Korea immediately recognized this emergency and called for all Korean-Amercian citizens to come out and protect their community. Seventeen year old Eddie Lee headed to out to Koreatown upon hearing Radio Korea's message. His parents were to read about his death in the Korean newspapers the very next day.
These tragedies were never fully addressed by our American government. Indeed, they were never even recognized by the mainstream media. No Korean shops received any reparations. Citizens of Koreatown have not even received a sincere apology, or acknowledgement, for being deserted and disregarded as foreigners during that time of crisis.
Most of the harm suffered by Koreans has been downplayed and minimized. MTV even had the nerve to estimate the property damages suffered by Koreans as 3 million dollars. (The actual loss rises above $400 million.)
Ten years has past, but the truth has yet to be told.

Why isn't Orange County listed as an option for "best environment for Asian Americans" in LA...? South Bay could fit into that category, but a lot of people might get confuse. Ever heard of Little Saigon, Garden Grove, UCirvine etc?!?! About 400,000 Asians live in this area. Just wanted to let you know, and hope this get posted for others to see....
