I know at least one Asian woman in the Brobeck office in SF so I think you miscounted.

Also, there are a number of Asian women who take white last names after they marry so I'd be careful when counting.

Also, you have to measure retention.

Finally, there are a lot more firms than the two you mentioned.

Finally, keep in mind how many Asians from top law schools want to work in California and how few proportionately there are in each law firm.

Stereotypes Stink,

These are hardly stereotypical statements.

If you live and work in any big city with a diverse population you'd know I'm telling the truth in general. Now there are definitely exceptions, but as a general rule you're crazy not to deeply consider female candidates for jobs where interpersonal and advisory skills are crucial.

What are you observing? These are very sterotypical statements. You are stereotyping women. Sterotypes of any kind are bad and prejudiced. Even if the sterotypie is hard working. Steroetypes are the results of lazy or deficient minds who don't or cannot put in the effort to get to know an individual.

I agree that many Asian women are exceptional professionals. Women generally have better interpersonal skills; on the other hand, some of them are not as competent or professional as male counterparts.

Yet some Asian women offer a unique combination of male competence and female interpersonal skills. Nowadays some men express desire to pursue the career of house-husbands. For these men, Asian female professionals would make great breadwinners for their families.

I was fascinated by the idea that California firms, in particular, hire many more Asian women than Asian men, so I took a (very) quick look at Gibson and Brobeck's websites. Here's what I found:

Gibson:

L.A. office:
Asian women: 6
Asian men: 2

S.F. office:
No Asians of either sex (Can this be right? Have I missed something?)

Orange County office:
Asian women: 1
Asian men: 4

Palo Alto office:
Asian women: 0
Asian men: 1

Brobeck

Palo Alto office:
Asian women: 10
Asian men: 11
Sex unclear from website: 1

Irvine office:
Asian women: 2
Asian men: 1

San Diego office:
Asian women: 2
Asian men: 1

S.F. office:
Asian women: 0
Asian men: 2
Sex unclear from website: 1

I didn't count South Asians. If these numbers are anywhere near correct, it would seem that, except for Gibson's L.A. office, the number of Asian women and Asian men in the California offices of Gibson and Brobeck is roughly equal. But does anyone know another source of accurate figures? I think the NALP guide gives only the total number of Asians, without any breakdown by gender.

And does anyone have a view as to whether Asians tend to gravitate toward particular fields in law? I've heard that Asian lawyers tend to be more heavily represented in transactional and IP work, and less so in litigation, but I've no idea if that's true.
