Bollywood Celebrities Sparkle at the Met Gala
By Najla Zaidi | 11 May, 2025

Indian dandyism goes beyond clothing but rather a lifestyle that encompasses both tradition and modern aesthetics.

The Met Gala theme this year was, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," which focused on the history and influence of Black dandyism in the Western world. The dress code, "Tailored for You," invited guests to decode the art of tailoring through their own vision. Indian celebrities and fashion icons hit the navy-blue carpet this year in bigger numbers than ever before.

Every Indian guest not only personalized their looks, but they also embraced their Indian dandyism by showing out in guises that seamlessly fused their Indian heritage with western elegance.

International film icon Shah Rukh Khan made his Met Gala debut in an all-black Sabyasachi suit, layered with jewelry and topped it off with a tiger head bejeweled cane. Designer Sabyasachi joined him in one of his own designs, a tailored ivory quilted overcoat with bold lapels, layered over a sharp white shirt and black trousers. A velvet cap with a jeweled plume, a multi-strand choker, and statement rings brought the drama.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas arrived in custom Balmain, featuring a cinched waist and power shoulders. She completed her look by wearing Bulgari’s Magnus Emerald Necklace featuring a 241.06-carat faceted emerald—the largest ever set by the maker.

Mindy Kaling graced the navy carpet in a custom Harbison Studios gown complete with Marco Bicego jewelry.

Diljit Dosanjh embraced his traditional side, wearing a regal Prabal Gurung ensemble adorned with Golecha's jewels and a matching turban. To complete the look, he carried the Kripan, adding a touch of royal flair.

Mother-to-be Kiara Advani made her Met Gala debut in a custom Gaurav Gupta gown. “At its core, a gold sculpted breastplate with two hearts — mother and child, connected by an abstract umbilical cord,” said Gupta.

Isha Ambani arrived in a custom Anamika Khanna ensemble that displayed Indian craftsmanship with its handwoven Benarasi train. The look also featured a historic Cartier necklace once owned by the Maharaja of Nawanagar.

Natasha Poonawalla's custom Manish Malhotra couture piece blended Indian artistry with her Parsi heritage. Her look featured vintage Parsi Gara saris, a corseted cummerbund, a tailored embroidered jacket, and a lace cravat by Atelier Biser.

Manish Malhotra made his Met Gala debut in his own design as well, a sculptural black sherwani cape, fusing Indian couture with dandy-inspired refinement. Embellished with intricate embroidery, glass beadwork, and brooches from his own jewelry line, the look was both refined and detailed.

Mona Patel went high tech in custom Thom Browne, accompanied by Vector, a robotic dog designed by MIT and inspired by Browne’s dachshund, Hector. Dressed in a tux and a 1000-carat diamond leash, Vector captured the audience.

Finally, Diya Mehta wore a custom BLONI structured suit crafted from pure Himalayan cashmere. The piece was encrusted with 15,000 clear quartz crystals. Mehta completed the look with a Nehru cap, silver cane, and gold and polki diamond jewelry.

The Met Gala was not only a celebration of art and style, but for Indian celebrities, and fashion icons it was a night to celebrate their own versions of Indian dandyism.
