Before Instagram and TikTok completely transformed what it meant to be an influencer, creators built online communities through blogs and curated content. One of those early pioneers was Jeanne Grey, a fashion and lifestyle creator who developed a platform that helped revamp the East Coast’s fashion culture.
Jeanne Grey was raised in a Filipino immigrant family that valued hard work and entrepreneurship. Grey has mentioned before that her parent’s mindset has had a huge influence on her career and the way she has formed her own path rather than taking a traditional route.
She began building her online presence in 2009, publishing her blog called GreyLayers where she shared her personal style and fashion opinions. Back then, blogging was still new, so Grey’s aesthetic stood out as she blended masculine and feminine elements in a modern way.
It didn’t take long for her blog to take off and gain recognition as an influential fashion platform. She took on roles as a stylist and creative director while she continued to post and maintain her distinctive voice on GreyLayers. As the industry evolved, Grey was successful with her transition from writing blogs to full on social media creator. Today she has gained over 700 thousand followers across her accounts and turned GreyLayers into a successful brand that has stayed true to its aesthetics, rather than switching to follow short-term trends.
Grey’s influence has been recognized by multiple media outlets like Vogue and Forbes, spotlighting her as a woman charting her own path in the influencer industry. GreyLayers was also nominated at the 2017 Shorty Awards, which celebrate success in social media and digital content. Over a decade later, Grey and her blog remain a respected voice in the digital fashion community and she has shown the world just exactly how the early era of blogging laid the foundation for today’s creator economy.
