Hey Binh,...--indeed some Vietnamese are descedents of Mongols, but most aren't(otherwise our eyes would look smaller w/o a lid like many Chinese/Koreans) .Also You forgot to mention that Viets are also descendents of Indonesia therefore the term "Indo-Chinese" --a Viet is 1/2 Chinese, 1/2 Indonesian> I learned from an Asian Studies class at my Uni. Although over thousands of years there has been cross breeding of Chinese/Viet the Vietnamese have maintained a strong physical identity(thats why if your asian you can most of the time tell a viet from chinese or other asian) Finally most Viets marry and have kids with other Viets >>so to all those Asians who keep saying that the Chinese/Mongols are the same things as Viets, you haven't been doing your research!!

For the Vietnamese ethnicity discussion, I believe that the Vietnamese are part Chinese and part Thai. Supporting reasons for what I'm saying:

1. An online encyclopedia that used to be on the web stated, "The Vietnamese people are descendants of Chinese and Thai peoples." I don't have the URL for this, but trust me I've been there, and haven't been able to find it again.

2. Information Please almanac 1998 edition also stated that it was possible that the Vietnamese descended from Vietnamese and Thai.

3. The U.S. Country of study supports what I'm stating, "The origins of the Vietnamese are generally traced to the inhabitants of the Red River Delta between 500 and 200 B.C., people who were a mixture of Australoid, Austronesian, and Mongoloid stock." The Thai's are part Austronesian and Australoid, which are the dark skinned people of Indonesia, Malaysia, etc., The Chinese are Mongoloid. And Vietnamese are part both. Further evidence that Vietnamese descended from the Chinese:

1. The first and second centuries A.D. saw the rise of a HanViet ruling class owning large tracts of rice lands. More than 120 brick Han tombs have been excavated in northern Vietnam, indicating Han families that, rather than returning to China, had become members of their adopted society and were no longer, strictly speaking, Chinese. Although they brought Chinese vocabulary and technical terms into their new culture, after a generation or two, they probably spoke Vietnamese
Excavations in Vietnam have discovered Tombs. URL: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?cstdy:1:./temp/~frd_29Ws::

2. Also, I'm a hundred percent Vietnamese with no known knowledge of having descended from Chinese, but repeatedly people who don't know me ask/say: "Do you speak Chinese?" "Do you speak Cantonese" "Initially I thought you were Chinese." "Your Chinese culture is different from Vietnamese culture." This is a reflection of how Vietnamese can be mistaken for being Chinese too frequently revealing the possibility of my Chinese descent.

I don't believe that Vietnamese descended from Mongolians, however some of the Vietnamese language has Mongolian elements. This, I read from a book on Vietnamese history. I forgot the title.

Lastly, I have no proof that Vietnamese were the descendants of the Thais, but they were conquered by them I read (again i forgot the title of this book). If anyone has evidence of this or want to refute, I'd love to hear it.
