"I find it really ironic how tons of Vietnamese people and other southeast Asians proclaim themselves to be Chinese, why?"
Don't flatter yourselves bud... Every culture has its up and down and thinking that the Chinese is one of the superior races in Asia is just plain dumb. I am a Viet and I look absolutely nothing like Chinese people nor most Viet people for that matter. Stereotype can only sum up so much but there are always exceptions... BTW, there are some Viet that really hated Chinese people thinking that they're scumbag and untrustworthy also... Part of the reason because the Chinese went to Vietnam and trick the natives over there and buy those black metals for cheap. I don't possess the historical knowledge of such an event but I heard it from my father and grandparents...

Chinese guy,
I think the reason that a lot of people think Vietnamese and Chinese look alike is because they mistaken the Vietnamese-born Chinese (most who look like other Chinese) as true Vietnamese. I've noticed that true Vietnamese indeed look different from Chinese, and even from most Southern Chinese. But of course, some Southern Chinese look Vietnamese.

Chinese guy,
You are dead wrong. Some Vietnamese guys in this forum just mention about the cultural links between China and Vietnam. I don't see any one claim he/she is Chinese. Vietnamese are proud to be themselves. Vietnam has its own unique culture which somewhat modified from Chinese culture. Bigger civilization tends to overwhelm smaller civilization. Vietnamese learn to respect Confucius philosophy and nothing is wrong with that.
BTW, I love Chinese food since I was 3 years old and when I grow up, I see some very cute Chinese girls. And nothing is wrong with that.

I find it really ironic how tons of Vietnamese people and other southeast Asians proclaim themselves to be Chinese, why? A theory is that they admire Chinese culture and everything that they feel ashamed of being Southeast Asian. But that's not possible is it? I think every country of Asia is distinct and has their respectable traits, why suck up to another country? By the way, there's quite a large difference between Chinese and Vietnamese, physically. Being not Cantonese, Mandarin, I'm quite offended that some people can't tell the difference. I mean, you have an excuse to have trouble telling the difference between Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, but Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laos, Thai, look a lot different!!!!!

I looooove Vietnamese food, especially Vietnamese noodle and roasted pork with rice. The roasted pork tastes so good with fish sauce. I also like the creamy fruit drinks (coconut, for example). There's one special drink which they put seaweed, lotus seeds and a bunch of other stuff. It tastes so cool! I suppose it's good for your health. It does cool you down quickly.
I began to love Vietnamese food after I came to the United States. There's no Vietnamese restaurant in China, though there're restaurants of many other countries. I think Chinese and Vietnamese food are the best in the world!
